Wise Words from the Doctor

June 20, 2008

As we remind ourselves to delight in the me-ness that fills a preschooler's mind, we turn again to the never-fail cheerfulness of Dr. Seuss for some perspective.  Read this aloud with your little one.  Perhaps he can memorize it.  She can certainly reenact it with glee.  And you will grin at the whole display, guaranteed.

"Come on!  Open your mouth and sound off at the sky!

Shout loud at the top of your voice, "I AM I!

ME!

I am I!

And I may not know why

But I know that I like it.

Three cheers!  I am I!"

Another wonderful Dr. Seuss gem that trumpets the beauty of individuality is "My Many Colored Days". It was one of Seuss' earliest childrens writings, but he never liked his own illustrations for it. His widow, Audrey, found illustrators that she though would do justice to this colorful, yet simple tale. It is one of the favorites around our house! Find it on Amazon in harcover or board book version. http://www.amazon.com/Many-Colored-Days-Dr-Seuss/dp/0679875972 You'll be glad you did!
