Start Singing: Sea Chanteys
August 21, 2008
Sea chanteys (or shanties, if you'd like to introduce your preschooler early to the world variant spellings) are easy-to-remember, easy-to-belt-out songs that help pass the time when you are manning the sails or pulling the oars. Or just sitting in traffic to get across town.
Here are some of our favorites for your little pirates, mermaids or confirmed landlubbers:
- Sea Music by the incomparable Dan Zanes
- At the Bottom of the Sea by Ralph's World (though the rest of the album after the title track detours fairly far inland, it's still fun)
- the absolutely fantastic lullabies of Down at the Sea Hotel, which also goes landlocked after a few songs, but by then your little one is headed to dreamland, so it hardly matters.
- The Smithsonian's Classic Maritime Music gives traditional sea songs their best treatment
- and the great soundtrack from The Little Mermaid
