Going to the Beach? Don't Leave Home Without....

August 04, 2008

Packing and unpacking aren't exactly top of our list of favorite ways to spend our days.  Except of course if we're headed to the beach.

Say "beach" and we are dragging out that old beat-up bag and shoving stuff into with glee!

(We're still not so thrilled with unpacking it at the end of the outing, especially as the sand spills everywhere, but by then we're all so sun-tired and cheery that we can't much manage to care!)

In that flurry of getting out the door, be sure you haven't forgotten:

• Wait -- can't find that old beat-up bag?  Get this darling one from Etsy -- you'll end up using it for everything and feeling beachy and chic each time!

big beach towels (on deep sale at the time of this posting -- hooray!), oversized so you can stake out some dry, sand-free corner for yourself.  Or at least try!

• pails, shovels, scoopers -- we think the best of all come from the assortment of rinsed-out yogurt containers and round and square reusable plastic containers that tumble out, lid-less, every time you open the cabinet under the sink.  If you're looking for something new, we adore this all-in-one sand toy set that comes with the old pail and shovels, as well as that essential funnel/wheel sand mill thingy that no little kid can seem to get enough of

our favorite sunscreen or this zinc oxide-based one (or both -- you can't have too many)

sandals that can go right into the water, because -- well, because that's just what your kiddos do

• sunglasses, yours and theirs

• wide-brimmed sunhats, yours and theirs

• and the usual selection of snacks and drinks that you end up dragging along with you on these outings.  Frozen grapes, anyone?

Happy beaching -- we'll see you at the shore!

I also like to bring an extra change of clothes and some plastic bags for wet outfits or other things. We like going to the beach but all the gear that we end up packing takes up an extra 30 minutes just to get ready.

I'd like to add plenty of bottled water for drinking and in a pinch to pour over sand-covered hands. If you've ever tried to give your child a hot dog or sandwich to eat while on the beach you'll know what I mean!

I've got a mesh bag that I keep just for beach days. Once you pack up the stuff in the bag, as you make your way back to the car you can't help but leave some of it behind. : )

Packing for the beach is a pain. But lugging it from the car to the water is even worse!
