July 2009: “ Summer Nights”
Wise Words About the Night
July 31, 2009
Truth be told, nobody adores the Great Bedtime Tango that we parents go through every night with varying degrees of intensity, passion and flair. The cajoling, the histrionics, the tyranny of the clock as it ticks later and later... Ah, but there's the rub: later towards what? Towards bedtime, of course. That monolith of endtime that bookends every child's day. But for parents, of course, bedtime doesn't end the day (unless you fall asleep first during storytime). The after-bedtime hours are so precious to us that we do the dance each night to ensure their maximum length. Sometimes we even hire a sitter and going to that opaque place, Out, to enjoy the world after bedtime. Sorry, kiddos, being up at night is only for grown-ups and possums.
It is one of life's bitterest truths that bedtime so often arrives just when things are really getting interesting. ~Lemony Snicket
