I have to say, my 3 year old learned to count to 10 in spanish from reading Dora books! I had no idea- she learned it all on her own. I quickly tried to add japanese (a language I speak), and surprisingly she's picked up most of them. When washing hands, I ask her which language she wants to count in. Then we count up to 10 for rubbing the soap, and down from 10 when rinsing off the soap. (That may not be "proper" hand washing technique? but she had fun with it and we wash a number of times a day so don't worry her hands are clean. ;)

We started by counting steps in our townhouse when going up and down when she was one. Then my husband progressed to counting to 10 in Greek before she was thrown on the bed at one-half. She learned to do the same in French class. At 2, I started counting to 100 every night after she was in bed. The monotony would often lull her to sleep or at least quiet her down. At 2 1/2, the Nanny and she would take turns counting on the metro. She would say 1 and the Nanny two, having learned the rhythm, she can now count on and on.

We count the cheerios we use to make cheerio necklaces as a way to make counting and learning numbers fun!

We love to count everything. We use the cheerio book where you put the cheerios on the pictures. My kids also love to bite their food into different numbers, they find toast is especially good for eating it to look like a number 3 or 1.
