School Philosophy & Day in the Life
School Philosophy and Mission
"An integral part of the child's journey is the desire to learn about her environment. The child has what Montessori termed "an absorbent mind." The child is capable of effortlessly acquiring knowledge of her surroundings. The child's acquisition of language is a good example: she is not taught her native tongue through the conscious effort of an adult. Given this "absorbent mind," it is easy to see why a stimulating environment can have such an impact on the child. The child is naturally interested in her environment and has an intrinsic desire not only to learn about it but also to achieve competence in it.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School
"8:30-8:45am or
12:30-12:45pm Drop-off / Settling in
Children hang up their coats, settle in with reading materials, and prepare for the day's activities.
8:45-9:00am or
12:45-1:00pm Large group activities
Door will be closed. Latecomers may enter after large group activities are concluded.
9:00-9:15am or
1:00-1:15pm Small group activities
Door will be closed. Latecomers may enter after smaller group presentations have concluded.
9:15-10:50am or
1:15-2:50pm Work Period
Children select activities that interest them. Individual and small group lessons are given during this time. Children also participate in special projects (music, art, etc.). Children may serve themselves the daily snacks (two children at a time) whenever they wish. This allows the older children a longer work period. The children tend to work intensely for a period of time, eventually have a brief period of fatigue; then regroup for another period of concentrated efforts. There will be group snacks on special occasions, such as birthdays.
10:50-11:15am or
2:50-3:15pm Large group activities
These activities, such as music, dramatics, discussions on topics of interest to the children, or special events/guests, vary from day to day.
11:15-11:30am or
3:15-3:30pm Outdoor play/Pick-up
When the weather does not allow for outdoor play, there may be indoor classroom activities or muscle room play.
