Director's Comments

Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
We encourage prospective families to come and visit our program. As Director, I believe that the loving way that the staff interacts with the children is one of the greatest selling points of our school. We truly love our children and feel lucky to be a part of their lives.

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
The school's philosophy is developmental/play-based with some Christian elements (praying before snack, chapel once a month, religious significance of holidays). There is a very small class size of 12 with a teacher and an aide. The 3's teachers and aides are wonderful and have all been there for years. The school has a beautiful setting as the classrooms open out to the protected church courtyard with generous lawn, play structure, sand and water area, etc. It is such a nice atmosphere with wonderful families. It does not require volunteering except to provide snacks and lead cooking a couple of times a year. Everyone knows everyone else since the school is so small.

Parent #2
SPP provides a wonderful Christian environment that provides moral as well as emotional and educational experiences. It is the most well rounded preschool that I have encountered.

Parent #3
These teachers really do care! I received a call one evening from my daughter's teacher. My daughter had been crying and she wanted to make sure she was okay.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

SPP provides young children with a positive school experience in a warm and supportive Christian environment. Art, group experiences, dramatic play, science, cooking, and gardening are just a few of the many areas explored by the children on SPP's tree-lined, spacious campus. Play is extremely important to our whole child-oriented program because it actively involves the child in the learning process and enables the child to experience concepts first-hand. The development of self confidence and positive self-esteem are essential to the well being of all children. Therefore, the program at SPP is designed to strengthen and reinforce the child's feeling of success through the exercise of choices and the appreciation of each person's uniqueness. We develop life long lovers of learning.

Director's Comments

All of the above areas of learning are done in more than one way/time each time the children are with us, in a teacher led activity as well as during free play. Both are important. During 'Free play' time each child explores on their own with some informal teacher guidance. Teacher interaction is done more one on one so the child can be met where they are developmentally. These areas of learning are also approached in teacher led activities that are done in a small group or large group setting, such at 'Circle time'.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The developmental approach provides age-appropriate hands-on experiences for the development of the whole child. The teacher leads the children in circle time, where they sing songs and listen to stories. But they are also given the opportunity to narrate their own, made up stories in front of the circle time group. The class provides areas of play and the children are free to choose what they want to do.

Parent #2
In addition to free play outside in a large area, the children also attend Gymsters (an organized teacher led gym class).

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Each child is met 'where they are at', which is part of the developmental philosophy. We provide materials and activities that are open -ended so no matter where a child is at in their growth, they will feel success. If a child is 'behind' a teacher may model or break down the task for the child to feel success. If a child is 'excelling', a teacher may encourage other areas for the child to explore in which they might need growth. It is part of our philosophy that more than just academic performance is important, such as social and emotional growth.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Saratoga Presbyterian Preschool is a developmental program that focuses on all areas of growth in a child: social, emotional, physical, academic and spiritual. The goal is to provide a loving, Christian atmosphere where the whole child grows and young families feel welcome. Art, group experiences, dramatic play, science and gardening are just a few of the many areas explored by the children. Cooking is a big component of the program and exposes the children to new foods, their origins and preparation. The school's bi-weekly Gymsters program gives the children a fun way to refine their gross motor and listening skills while learning healthy living through exercise. Other favorite activities include the fire department's pumper truck hosing down the church parking lot and farm field trips.

Parent #2
Because of the small class size and low teacher/child ratio (1:6), all children receive lots of attention. The teachers are so caring and nurturing, they also teach the children manners and respect for others.

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

Processing the children for leaving is especially important since their world dramatically changes when they leave our school to go to another. Throughout the school year the teachers increase their behavioral, social, emotional, and academic expectations. We especially encourage children to solve their own social issues with peers and phase our other social and emotional teacher guidance in favor of having them learn to solve problems on their own.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The non-profit Saratoga Presbyterian Preschool offers a developmental Christian preschool program in which play is the most important avenue to learning. The school is small with a student-teacher ratio of 6 or 7 students to 1 teacher. The campus is tree-lined, spacious and has excellent equipment. The parent education has been focused more on kindergarten readiness as opposed to development of a specific child. Parent-teacher conferences are held once prior to the child leaving for kindergarten. The teachers are extremely professional and warm, welcoming to both the child and parents. They are easy to get to know and loving. Both of my children thrived in this developmental preschool program and were hands-down ready to deal with the social and academic requirements of kindergarten.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.5) Four And Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Discipline is the positive and loving guidance given to a child who is constantly learning what behaviors are acceptable and appropriate in everyday situations. In peer conflict, peer interaction and problem solving behaviors are taught. Some other techniques are gentle hand on the shoulder, quiet verbal reminders, or re-direction to another activity. Communication with child, and parent if needed, is key.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

A teacher observing this situation would first see if children can work this out on their own, and continue watching. If a child is upset, then the teacher would intervene. The teacher would gather the three children and ask for each of them to explain what is going on. After each is heard, the teacher would ask about how each is feeling; the teacher may need to help a child verbalize their feelings. Then she would ask all of them how they might all solve the problem, giving suggestions only if needed. She would also continue to observe and/or check in with the children later to finish processing.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

This campus has a beautiful enclosed, fenced courtyard. The classrooms are situated around this. It is a small school with an intimate environment at a church. Therefore there is no formal screening of visitors, but it is not an issue at this campus.
