Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Hard to think of any weaknesses. Truly, this is an excellent program with highly caring staff and minimal turnover. Children here are treated with the utmost respect and taught to behave the same way with one another. Children are gently encouraged to tackle a variety of tasks for themselves (eating with utensils, going to the bathroom, putting things away, cleaning up after themselves, etc). The staff makes an effort to know each child on an individual basis...I know I can walk up to any teacher to get an update on my child's day. Academic program is cutting-edge in that it recognizes children learn best through play -- no TVs, computers, classroom-style set-ups here. Just lots and lots of hands-on fun.
Could not be more pleased. My oldest child is currently enrolled and we will be sending our youngest when she is old enough to attend.
Parent #2
Would like more daily verbal info on what my daughter is doing in class. There is a written note each day for the entire group.
Parent #3
I am always impressed by the professionalism at Campbell CDC. The teachers have thoughtful and appropriate activities, always giving choices to the children. The teachers consistently treat the children thoughtfully and respectfully.
Parent #4
These teachers really care about the children. They help the children solve their own problems and learn ways to talk to each other so they're ready for elementary school. They are also instrumental in identifying problems (special education, for example) and putting the parents on the right track for future help as well.
Parent #5
I love this school! The teachers approach the children very enthusiastically and positively, with a wonderful combination of honoring each child's unique self and teaching them to respect one another's differences. They let the kids have their feelings and offer support and comfort but they don't let one kid's upset disrupt the whole class.
Parent #6
Communicates well with parents. Encourage independence and problem solving skills.
Parent #7
This school is rare in philosophy in that it is not heavy academic and not religion based. I so appreciate that children are encouraged to be independent but within reasonable parameters. I have never seen a child treated disrespectfully. I am incredibly impressed by the communication of preschoolers in problem solving. I know that the program at Campbell CDC has inspired my children's creativity, independence and their ability to problem solve. I feel extremely grateful that my children are in a safe, caring and rich learning environment.
Parent #8
This is a multi-age developmental school. There is group time for instruction using age-appropriate strategies. Children make choices within a well-defined structure. The environment is welcoming, print-rich, and supportive of each child's interests and learning style.
School Philosophy & Day in the Life
School Philosophy and Mission
Our Philosophy
We hold high the principles of building healthy communication skills and positive self concept through hands-on experiences. As children engage in multi-sensory activities, they are involved in meaningful experiences which build awareness of varied viewpoints.
We value family traditions and parent involvement in the ongoing development in young children. We believe in building a strong community through mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding.
Children are encouraged to explore, invent, and discover logical paths to create their own unique understanding of the world.
Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School
Child and parent arrive and parent signs the child in. Together they explore what centers are already open, what activities are set up for the day, and greet staff, families and friends. Then the parent says goodbye and the child continues play at an activity (or begins play).
The child explores a few activities independently or cooperatively before the cleaning up to transition to Group Time. During Group Time the child participates in activities designed specifically for the whole group. The child feels succesful and joyful and he/she engages appropriately with this large group of peers. As Group Time ends the child chooses to continue on of the activities that was intorduced at Group Time with a close peer or two.
They complete their activity and clean up, deciding to visit nutrition to make some of their own pancakes and strawberries which are being offerened that day. After eating snack and cleaning up their spots at the table the children decide to go their separate ways to participate in each of their favorite centers independently.
The child engaged in a variety of familiar and new activities with favorite playmates and new ones of varied ages.
When the parent arrives the child greets the parent with a big hug and they gather the child's belongings together and say goodbye to teachers. The teacher may share an anecdote with the parent about one aspect of play, or an activity, or an interaction.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
After group time, children move through centers independently and therefore can interact with all teachers in the school. All teachers are dedicated to the school's philosophy that each child is an individual and is valued as such. I am impressed each time I'm at school by the way teachers speak to the children both in providing praise or guidance. The teachers are amazing!
Parent #2
We were very pleased with our daughter's teachers. They really got to know her as an individual, honored her uniqueness (even the difficult parts) and treated her in a way that was appropriate for her unique self.
Parent #3
I believe that while my child is at Campbell CDC, he is safe, respected, and loved. It is very reassuring as a parent to have found such a wonderful place that my child can thrive. All of my children that have gone through this preschool program have developed a love for school and learning. What a great way to begin!
Parent #4
Many times the teacher will let the children guide themselves through situations, while being supervised, and if it looks as though the child needs the help, they will step in. But first they like to let the child try on their own.
Parent #5
I haven't had a lot of opportunity to see the teachers in action but from what I have seen, I've been very impressed. They are generally very patient, respectful, quick to intervene, and always finding opportunities to help children grow their social skills.

Director's and Parents' Comments
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
This is a year-round school so there is not an official start date for all children. While most children new to the school start in the fall, the school tries to stagger their start dates so that they can give more attention to the needs of the new students. The staff handles separation issues beautifully, showing respect for the child's needs, acknowledgement of feelings, as well as encouraging the child to realize that they will be okay. Each situation is handled individually to meet the specific needs of each child.
Parent #2
Parents are encouraged to have children at school either before or after morning and afternoon group (circle) time and before and after nap time so as not to interrupt the groups learning and relating dynamic - or sleep - whichever applies to the situation.
Parent #3
The learning summary is developmental in nature. It is a written summary of my child's personal development in areas such as small motor skills, language, etc.. there are no standards to meet. Each child is honored for who they are and encouraged to develop at their pace. The environment is enriched and there is always support to try something new, to be successful, and to stretch understanding.
Parent #4
There is an extremely strong connection between home and school which is evidenced by the elaborate narratives (written by the teacher) a parent receives about his child twice a year. Also, a very thorough newsletter is sent home each month dealing with both general, school related topics, as well as each teacher's lesson plans for the month. There are also messages posted on the outside door of the school, announcing births, asking for supplies, and reminding parents about important dates.
Parent #5
The school does not operate on a traditional school year. There are conferences 2x a year. At those times, parents are given a written summary in developmental growth areas as well as observations of the child during the specific centers. Grandparents and families I have referred to the school have stated how impressed they are with the thorough written summaries and numerous examples of projects or other exhibits of growth areas. All of which are contained in a portfolio.
Parent #6
The separation process with our daughter was very difficult because of her level of shyness and difficulty with transitions; the Campbell CDC staff were very loving and patient, and went the extra mile to help her through the process.
Parent #7
The school is open year round, therefore it is possible to enter into the program at times other than the usual September beginning. As was the case for my child. We might have experienced some of the meetings and conferences in a different order, but were always informed on the program's policies and goals.
Parent #8
I love this school, as it is geared toward teaching children what they are interested in and not on a curriculum. My twin boys have matured and learn so much being at this school. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to attend.

Overview
Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline
Since our ultimate goal is self regulation and meta cognition, we support children in learning what is and is not safe. Redirection is a tool frequently used with children to help build an awareness that almost everything has a place. i.e. throwing sand...throwing a ball.
Teaching child to communicate their needs and preferences with others is an important goal of our program. So we narrate, facilitate, observe, and guide with kind words to describe what we see happening and gaining more information about the child or children's views.
We set clear limits with children and help them to follow through safely and appropriately.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
If Child B is ok with that I would not make it an issue. If Child B is sad then I would support him/her in sharing his/her feelings with Child A. I would also encourage Child A to continue to play with Child C. I might suggest or ask if there is room in the game for more children. If there is I would ask Child B if he/she could think of something to add to the activity that Child A&C were engaged in. If the children were very young I would probably redirect Child B to other fun activities

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Children are encouraged to use their words with each other. This behavior is modeled, and it is the expectation for everyone: children and adults.
Parent #2
My favorite part about this school involves the life lessons that are encouraged and taught. Children are spoken to with respect, and are taught to be independent starting at the age of two. They are also encouraged to use their words to work out issues and teachers make sure students follow through with their agreements made to teachers, peers, or both. I used to teach kindergarten and I can't underscore enough how important social development is for a child during the preschool years. I have looked at many preschools and have never found any that compare to CCDC in this regard. I can also say that my first grader graduated from CCDC and is now a very successful student in all areas, which I owe in large part to this school.
Parent #3
It is clear that the staff thinks about the set up of the facility to best meet the needs of the children. The outside play area is amazing. They have an amazing garden that all children get to experience hands-on.
Parent #4
I toured several schools before visiting this one and I was blown away by the stellar quality of the outdoor play area. It's truly a kid's paradise: bike paths, huge sand pit (with retractable cover to provide shade), lots of water play, beautifully crafted play/climbing structure w/ slide, fruit and vegetable gardens, a gazebo....

Just fell in love with it and the administrators could tell it would be a great fit.
Parent #2
It was a perfect match in terms of philosophy, however, I am not sure that helped with admissions.
