School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Our philosophy is based on the observations and writings of Dr. Maria Montessori who was a scientist, educator and the first woman to earn a medical degree in Italy.

Our curriculum instructs children in language arts, math, the interrelated study of life and physical sciences, history, culture, geography, the arts, and practical life skills. We have integrated the Montessori methods and curriculum with traditional public and private school curricula.

Our school employs current research and theories in child development and educational methods.

Rising Star Montessori school was established in 1982. Our Children's Cottage opened in the fall of 1984 after members of our Rising Star Montessori school expressed a need for a Montessori preschool offering extended daycare. Our students make the successful transition to local private, parochial and public schools.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

Our academic programs are challenging and stimulating with a comprehensive curriculum.

Recent studies have shown that children retain what they have learned better in a hands-on material environment.

We create learning environments which engages the child's imagination and love for learning in all the pre-primary and primary grades, the children begin the day with a morning group meeting. During this time they are welcomed with an overview of the day's announcements, assignments and activities, music and songs, calendar, weather. This is followed by dismissal into the morning work period with special small group or individual lessons that are under the framework of our Montessori curriculum guide.

Children are encouraged to fulfill their potential, moving through the academic curriculum at their own pace.

Parent Involvement Program: Research has found that a Parent Involvement Program is one way for parents, especially working parents, to participate more in their child's education, and at the same time to be more connected to the school. At Rising Star Montessori School we really encourage building a partnership between our families and our school. We require each family to contribute up to a maximum of 20 parent work hours to the school or to pay up to a $200 Parent Involvement Fee. Each family has 8.5 hours required work hours. We require parents to: 1. Attend the Parent Education Night. 2. Support the Fall Harvest Festival with at least 2 work hours. 3. Come to Parent Workdays and work at least 3 hours. (Two parents coming from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on one of these days can do 12 parent hours in one day!) 4. Assist your child's teacher as Classroom Helper with at least 2 hours of work. With higher levels of parent involvement, great rewards are brought to both the children and the school. Our expenses are reduced, tuition can be kept as low as possible, and your children benefit from the success of the activities and events at school. We welcome you to come and observe a classroom in session without your child. To arrange a time that is convenient for you, please call our office manager to set up an appointment (510-865-4536). At that time we would also give you a tour of our school and supply you the appropriate application forms. Re-enrollment forms for currently enrolled students go out in mid-February. Enrollment for new students begins in mid-March. Each child who enrolls in our school is put on a two week probation period starting from the enrollment date. They are evaluated at the end of six weeks at which time the parent and teacher will meet at the scheduled conference. If your child is having problems adjusting socially or academically during the two weeks or after, your child's teacher and the administrators will meet with you. At that time, we will reach a mutual agreement in finding a solution to the problem. If this cannot be done, a mutual decision may be reached to terminate enrollment.
