Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Very flexible with class diversity. Things are on a sliding scale, which makes things hard on the teachers

Parent #2
The community involvement at this school in unparalleled. The ability of the school's director, Judy Kahn, to create community is outstanding. There is a social justice piece that I value more than anything. I feel like the children are learning how to be good people and how to support others in a way that is real. If this school went all the way through elementary school people would be beating down the doors to get in. Once you are a Beatie Street parent, you meet other people in the community who are or who have been parents at this school and you know you have something special in common.

Director's Comments

Heavily influenced by Montessori philosophy but eclectic approach is used.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
This is a Montessori based school in philosophy. The head teacher actually teaches Montesssori classes at the college level so there is a huge base of understanding. However, she knows that children also need free play, dress-up and that this is a full-day program and children cannot focus all day long! There are circle times held during the day that all children attend. Most of the learning for the day is laid out at that time and children are encouraged to attend to tasks. Everyone participates in some activities and the teachers work with individuals and small groups. Again, this is preschool, so there should not be a huge push in academics. This age group needs to learn how to work together socially and emotionally. They do do a sound of the week, so phonics are introduced. Based upon this mode of learning, my 4-year old daughter is writing notes to me that are phonetically written. She feels very accomplished and some children are reading, as Kindergarten is part of this school as well. Each child is exposed to the curriculum and they learn at their own pace.

Parent #2
They are exposed to many things in circle and are always invited to do more in depth lessons.

Director's Comments

We are a very small school. We see parents daily. Parent meetings are availavle upon request.Does both - Advises in general on which kindergartens and elementary schools might provide the best education for their child and actively advises parents on which kindergartens and elementary schools might provide the best education for their child and works to secure a slot for their child. Depends on parent request.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
This is very small and so communication happens about students at drop off and pick up times often. I have always been able to have academic and social concerns addressed at these times or have been able to ask to schedule a meeting on my own time. There is no formal conference time for each child because each child might have different needs and they are addressed as soon as they come up be they a comment about something great or of concern. I don't want people to think that the fact that there isn't a written summary of academic progress indicates that it isn't kept track of, becuase the teachers are very talented and involved. Also, the questions about the end of the year I cannot answer yet becuase I have not concluded a year at this school. My experience has been the most supportive that I could ever imagine and I speak as a public school, elementary teacher myslef.

Parent #2
This school is also known as Beatie Street Preschool and it is an amazing place. The teachers are amazing and it is a very developmental place. The community is diverse and the teachers have a huge educational background. They know where kids are coming from and where they are going. Beatie Street feels more like a community than a school and my children's minds and spirits have grown in some amazing ways. As a teacher myself, it so great to see people that are so gifted at their craft.

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.4) Four Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Positive discipline and guidance policies are used. We do not use time out.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

Depending on the circumstances, such as the ages and developmental levels of the kids we might: 1 - encourage all 3 children to play together. 2 - remind the childrent that we are all friends, don't want to hurt each others feelings, and should say - I am playing with c now, but I will play with you later.
