Director's Comments

Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
It is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in your child's first school experience. We are a 'family,' a community, who support each other. There is a large time commitment but it is worth every minute that you invest!

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
HRNS has been a wonderful preschool for both my children! The teachers & staff are nurturing, loving, and responsive. The classrooms are well stocked with lots of activites, books, etc. for the kids to explore; each day there are also a variety of directed activities during free play time. The kids get a chance to explore art, science, & math with a 'play' feel. This school is simply wonderful !!

Parent #2
Strenths far out weigh any weaknesses the school may have. Loving environment that is conducive to learning, playing and socializing. Wonderful, hardworking staff that put a lot of time and thought into their lessons. I love the free flowing classroom the most. The children are able to do activities in 3 classrooms and outside every day!

Parent #3
I like allot the way how the teachers and TAs handle the situations with the kids.

Parent #4
A great combination of free play and structured time. The day is divided between time when the kids can choose among several activities (bikes, sand, play structure, art projects, manipulatives, pre-math, science, blocks, trains plus more) and more structured time (story, sharing, circle) where they need to be able to sit quietly and raise hands. Parents are integral to the school. They assist in the classroom on a regular basis and run the business of the school via the board of directors. The staff is MARVELOUS!!!! They take an interest in each child and get to know the whole family.

Parent #5
the teachers and staff are wonderful and truely enjoy working with children. The children are taught in a mixed age classroom, in the upper school (3-5 year olds) but the lower school (2-3 years olds) are in a separate area and playground. Lower school allows children who are not yet potty trained and the teacher is wonderful in helping the younger ones master basic soical skills. Upper school is a busy place with free choice activities offered at art, science, math, and manipulative tables every day. In each of the three classroom all children may also engage in various art, cooking or other activities during open time. Parents are highly involved, as this is a co-op preschool. 2-3 parents work in the classroom with the two teachers every day. One working parent provides snack daily. This is a wonderful and caring community and if you are in the area is worth a look.

Parent #6
I love the co-op aspect, but some individuals can politicize things that don't need to be. This does not tend to affect the kids, it's just an annoyance.

Parent #7
We have had four teachers at this school and found all four to be wonderfully warm and developmentally appropriate teachers. When we run into them now, they great us warmly and remember my children.

Parent #8
We have been very happy at HRNS. It is a warm welcoming community, and as a co-op school we feel we have gotten to know the children and their families. My son's teacher is so patient and I have never seen her at all flustered. I often wish I had a small version of her on my shoulder at home giving me the words to say in challenging situations. About 3 months into school, my son randomly told me how much he was enjoying school and that his teacher was very good at solving problems. He is very excited to go to school each day.

Parent #9
Hastings Ranch has a real family-centered atmosphere. You really feel part of a family when your child is a student at the school. Even though there is a lot of fundraising you can see first hand how the money is used.

Parent #10
The director and teachers genuinely love the kids. As a parent I learn a lot about encouraging kids, redirecting them, resolving conflicts, through watching the teachers interact with the kids. I love that there are so many different really cool art and science projects for the kids to choose from. The kids also take turns visiting the other classrooms and sharing up front with the other kids about what activities their classrooms are sponsoring and invite the other kids to come visit.

Parent #11
This is a co-op, so you have to be willing/able to commit your time. You can pay-out for some of it if you need to. As a whole, this is a special school. The children are all really great and it's a lot of fun getting to know the other parents as well. Since it's a co-op, you get to know everyone very well. As it's a developmental school, the ages are mixed in the classrooms. At first I thought this might be weird, but it's been really great. The younger children learn from the older, and the older enjoy sharing their knowledge. All in all, we've had a great experience.

Director's Comments

It is impossible for me to limit to one or the other in the above categories because neither one is exactly accurate! HRNS curriculum is based on developmental theory and is carefully planned by the teachers. It is implemented with the belief that play is a child's work. It is the natural mode of learning for the young child, who is learning at all times. Children move through sequential stages of development in four interrelated areas: Physical (gross and fine motor) Social (peer interaction, social skills and awareness) Emotional (self-esteem, awareness and recognition of feelings, healthy balance) Cognitive (comprehension, language development, problem solving, and skill acquisition) Children need mastery at each level before moving on to the next. We place equal importance on all major areas of development. Through careful observation of play, teachers are able to assess development and add challenges as needed to further individual growth.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
This is primarily a developmental preschool with emphasis on learning via physical interaction with the environment using art, movement, etc. It is, however, a well thought-out program. There is a multitude of different activities available for the children to do if they choose to. There is an art table, a science table and a math table with different activities for each day. There is structure too?there is a circle time, a formal sharing time, calendar time and some one-on-one time with teacher for fine motor activities such as cutting and writing.

Parent #2
In general most of the activities are available at stations where the children can decide whether or not to participate, and they are gently encouraged to try new things and activities, but not forced to do so?so while children choose their own activities, there are a variety to choose from at stations, and there is some teacher encouragement. Certain activities happen during circle time. For example storybook reading?his teacher always reads a story to the group during second circle before snack, but every room has a reading corner with books and comfy seating and children have the option of looking at or reading books on their own or with an adult any time in the day. Nursery rhymes and songs are formally led during circle by the teacher, often in preparation for a holiday concert for parents, otherwise children can listen to music and sing and dance during play time. Emerging literacy may take place in small groups or one on one with teacher or other classroom adult. Students keep notebooks that they add to throughout the year with artwork, photos, student writing, and stories or observations dictated by the student but written down by the adult. Orientation in time and space might take place at a free play station, but is also covered daily in second circle time where there is a discussion of the calendar and the weather amongst other things.

Parent #3
"Academics" are primarily free-play, but it is surprising what the kids learn.

Parent #4
Each room has a library nook and adults are availble during free play to read to children. At circle time the group talks about the calendar, weather, and counts who is here. Teachers take small groups/individuals to practice names, phone numbers and addresses. Each child also has a journal where they can dictate captions to pictures or draw with the teacher.

Parent #5
Each area is available to kids as a station during free-play but teachers also work individually/small/large group. A story is read each day. At least once a week there is group singing during circle time. Teachers also lead the group in music/movement. Each day there is calendar time (day/date).

Parent #6
language, math, science, and music are taught both by the teachers and as options during free play.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
This is a mainly developmental school, where children learn through play. In addition to free play on outdoor equipment, and indoor free play areas, there is always an art table, science or math table, and manipulative table. Academics are not emphasized, however, the children do learn fine and large motor coordination, social skills, and some writing, the calendar, seasons, nature, holiday traditions, counting through their play and through their discussions and activities during circle time (they do learn how to sit quietly and listen).

Parent #2
Each of our teachers has a different strength that complement each other.

Parent #3
While these comments hold true for my son's teacher this year, they also hold true for his teacher from last year. The teachers are a huge part of why HRNS is such a wonderful place for kids.

Director's Comments

Parents are invited to stay until they and their children are comfortable. When a parent leaves, there are adults available to comfort and engage a child who is having difficulty with separation.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
We have been very happy with the preschool. The director is wonderful and the teachers are all very caring and positive. This is a developmental school that does not stress academics, however I have been very impressed with both my child's learning. It's a wonderful school and have had a very positive experience. It is much more than a school you just drop your child off at. The parents get to know one another very well also and they have many family events/activities that further promote the social community.

Parent #2
This school is a parent participation cooperative, so all parents work in the classroom a certain number of days each session.

Parent #3
We were only at HRNS for one year because we moved away from the area. I knew it was a great school at the time, but it wasn't until I was searching for a new school in our new city that I realized what a truly amazing experience we had. The 2's and 3's teacher is incredibly good with the children and understands child development superbly. She teaches important skills such as cooperating with others, following directions, expressing feelings, and more. As long as weather permits, the kids may choose to play inside or outside during free play periods.

Parent #4
While HRNS is a developmental school and as such does not have "hard" goals as to what the children will know at the end of a school year, they do expose the children to a variety of activities through which the children learn basics such as letters, numbers, how to write their name, colors, shapes, etc. in addition to social development experiences. Apart from the 2 year olds, the 3-5 year olds are in multi-age classrooms. Also, while there is no formal end of the year assessment of learning as this is a developmental school, the teachers do assess where the children are at various points in the year in regards to knowing numbers and letters, fine and large motor skills, ability to listen and follow directions, etc. These observations are shared with parents at the mid-year teacher/parent conference. The teachers are also readily available to discuss such issues at any time. I know that these types of questions come up a lot as parents are assessing whether their child is ready for kindergarten and that teachers happily provide their observations and opinions. The teacher may also have a specific goal for a particular child. For example, our son will attend kindergarten next year and the teacher said one of her goals for him is to help him be able to listen and focus in circle time in preparation for next year.

Parent #5
When my daughter became anxious about being dropped off at school during the year, her head teacher encouraged me to call her from home. We had a wonderful and reassuring conversation.

Parent #6
The teachers are great about separation anxiety (both on the part of parent and child). Parents help in the classroom regularly so we can see what our children are doing on a daily basis.

Parent #7
The school shares the developmental level in several areas (small & large motor, social & academic development) mid-year and at the end of the year in a written form as well as in conference.

Parent #8
teachers are very responsive if a child is having trouble separating, offering extra attention, hugs, or working out a plan with the parent.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.9) Four And Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

We use redirection as a primary approach. If children are having a conflict, we encourage them to work it our themselves using their words. An adult will facilitate when help is needed.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

An adult will facilitate when help is needed.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The facilities and equipment are not new or shiny, but there is a large variety of things to do.

Parent #2
Snacks are provided by the parents. They are usually healthy but we all have differences in what we consider healthy. The school does provide a list of preferable snacks and a list of inappropriate snacks. I am not sure how often the toys are all cleaned. We clean the floors and the tables every day.

Parent #3
Five times a year we have a parent maintenance day where all equipment is cleaned, painted, and repaired. We also have parents take small toys home regularly to clean them.

Parent #4
Parents bring snacks on a rotating basis. The school provides guidelines and allergy information but selection is up to the parents.

Parent #5
HRNS does a good job of handling conflicts between children. They are encouraged to understand how the other child feels, to apologize when appropriate, and talk about what could have been done differently next time.

Advice from Parents to Prospective Parents on Admissions

Parent #1
I think it's just first-come, first-served sort of thing.

Parent #2
Apply early and start child out in the 2 year old class, 2 day program, or afternoons to get your foot in the door. I had to start my 3 year old in the afternoons--but the afternoons turned out to be great.

Parent #3
Applied early.

Parent #4
I started looking early enough that there was still space available to enroll in one of the classes (Tues / Thurs AM). We were waitlisted for our preferred days and ended up getting them (MWF AM).

Parent #5
We had a tour of the school and thought the head of school was great and very knowledgeable.

Parent #6
Be flexible about which session to attend

Parent #7
Applied early, we were fine with Tuesday, Thursday schedule instead of M-W-F mornings, which is most popular.

Parent #8
apply early and/or be flexible on days/times

Parent #9
I didn't do anything special, but my daughter didn't want to leave! She felt very comfortable immediately, and I think they knew she would be happy there.
