Director's Comments

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Through developmentally appropriate practice, our program provides for a variety of experiences, levels of difficulty, and pacing. Our philosophy is based on the principle that learning should be the result of the actual experience that play is a significant mode of learning, and above all, that school should be a place of joy.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

We offer a well-rounded curriculum in the morning along with fun activities in our extended care program. Our days are structured but not rigid. The children have significant input in how their day may go. The daily schedule includes: Morning snack, Art, Outdoor play, Classroom time, Lunch, Music and Story time, Nap or Quiet time, and Facilitated play.

Director's Comments

Our process-oriented curriculum looks at each activity as an opportunity to gain higher skill levels for greater competence. A child's self worth is at risk when we forget to allow them to enjoy the process of each activity for learning's sake rather than performance. A strong point that we feel is important to the development of a healthy self-image is that it is okay to fail. Children in our society are very competitive, which impedes generosity, and they get very distraught when they lose. Our curriculum provides a safe learning environment that supports a healthy self-image. In the above area, emerging literacy skills in reading and writing was labeled as 'predominantly teacher-led instruction' because we have a program for phonics that is teacher led. Many of our other activities in this area may be described as 'free play with some structure.'

Director's Comments

We feel parents are as important as children. We have established parent support group meetings. These meetings are held every other month. Parents have the opportunity to talk about any issues they feel are important. Furthermore, if there are any issues parents would like us to research in preparation for a meeting, we are happy to do so. We also offer guest speakers on certain subjects. We have daily logs to report the day's events as well as a monthly calendar to inform parents of upcoming events. We also provide a kindergarten readiness seminar/parent meeting for those who are interested.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.6) Four And Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Our first course of action is positive redirection (for instance, a child may simply be directed to another activity) and facilitation of win-win problem solving. Generally, these two approaches are successful. If they are not, other strategies are utilized, which may include removing a child from an area or limiting access to materials for a brief time until the child is more in control and able to respond to or follow safety guidelines.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would try to redirect the children to a game where three people are necessary. If Child A is insistent that they do not feel like playing with Child B, we might put our attention on redirecting Child B to play with Child D. We would ask Child B how they are feeling. Sometimes they are not affected and can easily be redirected. If Child B is hurt we will help him/her through those feelings. We would also follow up with Child A so they understand how their friend felt and how they can make it better the next time.
