School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

"Our goal is to give children a positive early education experience in a nurturing environment. Our curriculum includes academic as well as social and spiritual goals. We have a Bible story once a week and emphasize Christian values in our teaching"
Excerpted from the preschool's website

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

Each day our children have many free choice opportunities with lots of small motor, dramatic play, science exploration and literacy opportunities as well as structured art projects and free art. We have a group time with calendar (for 4's) a theme we talk about and music and fingerplays and storytime. We have either indoor or outdoor large motor time, and snack time as well.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

We are a developmental program and address each child at their own level and plan our activities accordingly.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

We send a lot of communication home regarding our schedule and activities and encourage parents to interact with their children about their school day. We have a newsletter. We send home a readiness evaluation before they go to kindergarten and are available for conference on an individual basis.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
- Parents in classroom early on
- Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

We encourage parents to leave and let us handle the problem, which usually ends soon after the parents leave and we get the child involved and distracted. Because we have taught for so many years, we are used to handling this issue.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

We try to use a lot of positive behavioral comments to point out "good" behavior. We time out if necessary and communicate with parents to get their support from home.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would remind Child A to always be kind to friends and then remind B that A may fell like being with a different friend today, but will probably be happy to play with B another time, then help B to engage with another child.

Food Allergies

- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child

Medications

- We keep their medication on hand at all times
