Hands down to SVBB!!!!!!!!

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

SVBB is committed to providing a positive learning experience that will be the cornerstone of your child’s future success. Our focus on a child’s overall growth enables not only academic readiness and preparedness, but also their social, emotional, and physical growth. Children get the opportunity to explore, question and learn – within a fun and supportive environment. We believe that each child has unique and individual talents and interests. Our teachers honor these differences with customized attention and activities to help each child learn and grow at their own pace, in their own style.

At SVBB our teachers base their daily lessons on the following philosophy

★ Children learn through active exploration. – SVBB programs encourage children to explore, experiment, and discover solutions through an active array of projects and materials.
★ Children initiate their own learning. – At SVBB children spend a major portion of their day exploring freely while supported and guided by teachers.
★ Learning comes from open-ended experiences. – SVBB teachers encourage children to exercise their imaginations and reasoning skills through creative problem solving. We believe the process of finding answers is infinitely more valuable than the answers themselves.
★ Adults are facilitators of childhood learning. – SVBB teachers and parent volunteers are encouraged to ask children questions and initiate discussions. We plan and create learning environments that are stimulating and enjoyable.

CURRICULUM: SVBB uses curriculum and instruction strategies that will strengthen children’s ability to achieve the standards. These strategies are based on knowledge of how children develop and learn as well as what they already know and what they need to know and be able to do. Planning acknowledges that learning is playful, interactive, interdisciplinary, and connected. It also recognizes and provides for a balance between individual and group needs, between active and quiet times, and between teacher-directed and child-selected activities. Teachers influence what children learn by preparing the learning environment and providing an array of materials and equipment students may use to explore, investigate, solve problems, and find answers to their questions. Throughout the school year Christian values and biblical teachings will be incorporated and will include stories, songs, celebrations, prayer and service projects.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Children are assessed at the beginning of each school year. From these assessments we break the students up into small groups based on academic development. During centers these children are worked with in their individual groups so they are constantly being challenged, but not being discouraged. The students excelling will continue to excell, the students behind, are engaging in areas where they need extra help. And as a whole they are all getting their needs met. We assess the children in the middle of the school year and at the end so we can continue to map their progress.

PARENT COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVEMENT: Monthly newsletters will be distributed to inform you what we will be working on for the month and any important information and reminders SVBB Teachers may have. Each child will have a folder which will be used to distribute any paperwork, newsletters, or notices to parents. Also this is where any projects will be placed when it’s time to be taken home. It is the parent’s responsibility to check them on a regular basis, and read through all information to ensure you are aware of all special days, events, subjects of study, etc. involving your child. During the school year SVBB will schedule quarterly parent teacher conferences with those families SVBB staff feel it necessary.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (5.0) Five Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

DISCIPLINE:
Discipline will be individualized and consistent for each child. It shall be appropriate to each child’s level of understanding and be directed toward teaching the child acceptable behavior and self-control.
■ Physical punishment shall not be administered to children.
■ Staff/volunteers shall not shame, humiliate, frighten, physically or mentally harm children, or label them negatively.
■ Discipline shall not be associated with food, rest, or illness.
■ The length of time a child is placed in time-out shall not exceed two minutes per year of the child’s age.
■ the following activities or threats of such activities are inappropriate as disciplinary measures and shall not be used for children; these include but are not limited to :
- abusive language
- isolation without supervision
- inflicting physical pain
- forced physical activity
- yelling at children

It is the philosophy of Selle Valley Bright Beginnings to provide positive discipline to children. These are suggestions to be used by staff/volunteers:
■ Redirection: Suggest appropriate behavior.
■ A quiet, private talk: Show respect for the child’s feelings. Get down to the child’s level and give the child complete attention. Be direct and brief.
■ Direct praise: Praise the child that is behaving appropriately. Catch the child being good and comment on that to the child. Avoid always catching the child engaging in inappropriate behavior.
■ Indirect praise: Praise a child who is behaving the way you want the rest of the group to behave.
■ Role Model: The staff should always be a role model for the students. Staff should also role model behavior such as using a whisper voice when they want children to be quieter.
■ Logical Consequences: The outcome is a natural consequence of the behavior.
■ Arrange Contingencies: For acts of physical aggression or other serious offences, a “time out” or supervised separation form the group is appropriate. Staff will give forewarning, then follow through in a firm, fair, and friendly manner with the action announced. When the child is calm enough to listen, the reason for time out will be explained. Staff will listen to the child tell how they felt, why they did what they did, and the teacher will tell how she/he felt about the situation. It is very important that we take time to listen to the child’s side of the story.

Learning to express emotions verbally and honestly is a normal part of childhood. Staff/volunteers will help by modeling appropriate behavior and by teaching an acceptable vocabulary to express anger, annoyance, sadness, etc. Staff/volunteers must keep their eyes and ears open to possible discipline problems that can be avoided and we must always listen to what children have to say.

These are the SVBB rules for children:
■ Always follow directions.
■ Use inside voices.
■ Be respectful to adults and other classmates
■ Clean up after yourself.
■ Keep hands, feet , and other objects to yourself.
■ Follow playground rules.

These are the consequences for children abusing the rules:
1. Verbal warning- This reminds the child of the rule broken. The key is to learn from their mistakes.
2. Time-Out- This allows the child to think about what he/she did wrong and what to do in the future so as not to make the same mistake again.
3. Speaking to Parent- If a rule is continually broken, it will be documented and the parent will be informed.
4. Remove from Class- The child may be removed from the setting to allow the child to calm down.
5. Suspension- In cases of severe or continuous behavior problems.
6. Disenroll from the program- Continuous behavior problems after suspension.

If a child is disenrolled due to behavior, he/she will not be allowed to re-enroll until the next school year and it will be on a probationary basis.
