Parents' Comments
Parent #1
This school is loved by the theater families, who have lower standards and have the flexibility this coop school requires. As part of the coop, parents must volunteer in the school and are expected to be very involved in field trips, fundraising, etc. Its a bad fit for families who don't have that much flexibility, especially since they are closed more days than any other preschool.

The teaching is good, but not as good as reputed. The facilities are rundown and dirty, the bathroom situation is terrible.

Either you fit into this school or you don't. If you don't, you will be miserable.

Parent #2
They have dealt well with any problems that occurred.

Parent #3
The school emphasis is on free play, and provides a wonderful environment to do so. If your family wants a very structured environment, this would not be an appropriate choice. I am very satisfied with what the school offers.

Parent #4
My kid loves this school He feels totally at home there. This is critical to me in addition to the care he gets. He could stay all day and love it. The parent community is exceptional and extremely dedicated. On a more personal note I don't believe a great deal of attention is given to the individual child or their special needs. Kids must mostly adapt to the way the school is run. There isn't much sensitivity around emotional/social deficiencies. With some kids there is and with some there isn't. There isn't a lot of feedback from the head teacher on any regular basis as to how your child is doing, at least not with my child. It is mostly up to the parents to pursue if they are interested in how their child is doing.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

"43rd Street Kids is a safe, creative place where children are encouraged to make their own discoveries. We believe that in early childhood, learning can and should take place in a social community. We provide a supportive environment where children can interact with other children, adults, and materials. At the same time we hope to foster a sense of community among the children, as members of their class and the school. We strive to provide an early education that is non-sexist and reflective of our community's ethnic, cultural and economic diversity.

Students and their families become part of a warm, nurturing community. We believe it is important for parents to play an active role in their children’s early education. Family pot luck suppers and holiday parties give people a chance to share a meal and a good time with other 43rd Street Kids’ families.

It is our belief that we are all learners. Children learn from each other, teachers and the other adults in their lives. Teachers and parents learn from each other, the children and the outside resources that are made available through the school.

We encourage each child to learn and develop at his or her own individual rate. Our goal for each child is overall development shown through an increase in his or her social, emotional, intellectual and physical skills." (SOURCE: http://www.43rdstreetkids.org)

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Our school has an excellent swimming program which is teacher-led, of course. They also have a movement class which is teacher-led. The outside activities are mostly about free play. So, some things are teacher-led and some are free play.

Parent #2
Most of the class time is unstructured, with different activity stations set up around the room. There is a structured story time, singing time during each class.

Parent #3
The head teacher calls the shots and no one else gets any input, either the other teachers or the parents

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Teachers two and three spend more time with my child than teacher one. I believe teacher one spends her time with children who have more difficulty adapting or blending in. Teachers two and three spend time with the majority of the kids and so can offer me the kind of feedback that perhaps teacher one couldn't.

Parent #2
The school has a wonderful music teacher, dance teacher and swimming program.

Director's and Parents' Comments

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
We are permitted to stay in the classroom at the start of each day for approximately 10-15 minutes. At this time we can read to our kids, get them adjusted and begin to say our good-byes. This process was very difficult for my child but over the course of a month or two he slowly began to feel at home in his school setting and so the need to stay longer wasn't' necessary. Doing it this way took the edge off of the immediate drop-off without giving the child the time to adjust.

Parent #2
For the youngest children, the parents or caregivers are in the classroom with the children through age 2 1/2.

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (3.6) Three and Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The preschool is in an excellent building and the maintenance people are excellent. The school itself is small but cozy and since it is a non-profit they aren't used to making the kind of profit that might allow brand new toys each year or new furniture. The furniture is clean, sturdy, and always maintained.

Parent #2
The pride themselves in providing healthy snacks. However they serve juice but refuse to serve milk (supposedly for milk allergies, but they have no such restrictions on cheese, which is served often).

The outdoor playarea is too small for the number of kids, so they are frequently bumping into each other, riding tricycles into crowds. The kids are covered in bruises.

Application & Admissions

Application Process

Application fee: $25

Admissions Process

Acceptance criteria: • Priority for acceptance is given to currently enrolled families. Currently enrolled families living outside Manhattan Plaza have the same priority as resident families. • Full Day applicants are given priority for the AM Preschool class. • If there are more eligible applicants than openings in any class, a lottery takes place. The lottery is divided into two separate sections according to the ratio of boys to girls in the class. • After places have been filled with returning students and full day applicants, any available spots are given first to new students who are Manhattan Plaza residents, and then to alumni families from outside Manhattan Plaza. Finally, the spots are open to all who apply. • If two new resident students apply, and are eligible for the same spot, priority is given to the first application submitted. Alumni families in good standing are given priority over new residents if the class is made up of 50% resident families

Financial aid is available.

Advice from Parents to Prospective Parents on Admissions

Parent #1
Starting him in their early program for 1 year olds and two year olds. Most kids simply move up who have already been in the school and people who apply without prior entry are considered after current kids are placed.
