All Souls is different from other schools in that it truly nurtures the childrens interest in learning. It encourages the kids to run with an idea through art, music, conversations in the classroom, field trips etc... It is also a very diverse community full of fun and energetic families willing to get involved.

In the admission process the school stresses that it is child based/play learning. Though this is true, there is a lot of direction and internal structure in the day and the curriculm. The children are directed in a direction and then allowed to learn the lesson in their own way. Not sit and learn but not anything goes.

Strengths of this school are many, and it has been a wonderful place for the development of our children. Our child who has gone on to Kindergarten is well-prepared and doing beautifully in his new school. My one wish is that there had been more focus on certain areas (like writing one's name well in a small space) had been stressed for my son as children from other schools did a much better job at ongoing school interviews.

We have had the pleasure of sending three of our children through All Souls School. Each experience has been unique, as each child is unique. We have had the opportunity to get to know almost all of the teachers and staff over the years and they are exceptional. They are educated, committed, loving and nurturing. It is not a stagnant group - they continually seek out opportunities to improve themselves and the classes they teach. The parent community at All Souls is amazing - it is as 'real' a group of people as you could ask for in New York City. There are regular events scheduled throughout the year to bring the families together and they seem to get better and better each year. Nothing I have experienced outside of All Souls even compares. It is unique and very special. My criticisms for the school are few. Although there is not really a 'need' for a reading/writing/mathematics program at this age, I do wish they would incorporate it into the curriculum a little more than they do. In my opinion, children are 'sponges' and will take in whatever they are offered. Exposing them a little more to these basics would be beneficial. It shouldn't be a forced curriculum, but it could be made more available. The only issue I have ever had with the school came with a year in which we had a class of almost all siblings. The dynamics within the class were terrible, partly due to the result of several children with special needs. The teachers were not prepared to handle all the challenges that came their way, and as a result, it was a very difficult year for many of the children and parents. The reason it is hard to even bring this up is that the school has an amazing sibling policy- in fact it is automatic. Therefore, they are not handpicking the group of children to create a cohesive unit. They made efforts to work through it, somewhat successful, somewhat not. Luckily this was one year out of many at the school, and I'm sure the administration will be very conscious and work to prevent future situations such as this one.

This is quite hard as we have had many teachers at the school. Overall the experience has been exceptional. Most teachers would receive 'always' on every question. In a few cases, we have experienced difficulties that have stemmed from problems within the class and the dynamics of the children themselves. Some teachers are better at handling challenging situations. We have had one teacher more than once and the experiences were completely opposite due to the group of children in each particular class.

All Souls has great teaching teams. Most of the teams have been teaching together for more than 10 years, yet there is some new, freshly educated staff. Teaching the children to handle dispute resolution/mediation is a big goal and most children can and do resolve their own matters, sometimes with a teacher refereeing to ensure equal airtime for each child to state his/her position.

I have had two children in this classroom.Each of the 3 teachers has her own stlye and method but they work as a unified team. They run the class room so that it has structure without being rigid. Between the 3 of them they are able to make each child feel special, talented, clever, and SAFE. Each of the 3 teachers are excellent preschool teachers.

Involvement at school in your own child's classroom is limited, however parents serve as substitute teachers in other classes. This program provides terrific insight into how the day works at this developmental school. Ability to participate in specific class activities (a special cooking or craft activity, guest reader, etc.) increases as the children get older. The childhood development courses comes in the form of weekly group session with the school's director to discuss developmental, behavioral issues that one's child is experiencing. It is a small additional fee and is voluntary. Parents Association has one large fundraiser (an auction in December), also sponsors a pancake breakfast (Dads do this), book fair, carnival, cocktail party at the beginning of the year for parents to meet, new parents cocktail party in the spring, newsletter, cookbook, etc.

Always welcomed to read at story time or cook with the class basically welcomed to share anything of interest with the children whether it be a parent directly or another family member.

Until the entire class has mastered separation, parent visits are not encouraged. Once the class can transition from having one special parent in the class room 'teaching' to that one parent leaving, parent participation is STRONGLY encouraged. We just received a request for participation in my youngest child's class at the beginning of this month (March) - after 'parent's visit the classroom day' that went very well. My child started school this year at 2 years old, is now 3, and attends 3 day a week, 9-11:30. My child had trouble separating at the beginning of the year. It was not until Thanksgiving or so that my child felt comfortable at drop off. Also, though the school is 'play based' the teachers 'teach' skills in that context. Not mathmatics or reading per se but readiness skills, like patterns, etc. Your child's progress reports discuss how your child is doing in readiness - not in relation to the other kids in the class but what your child could/should be doing.

The questions regarding verbal or written guidance are not great. At All Souls there is a constant conversation going on throughout the year between the teachers and I about my daughter. They do not provide formal summaries or reports but the communication level has been excellent in my experience.

In terms of the facilities, the school has been undergoing renovations the past few years and continues to update and improve.

School is located inside a church office building. Screening is informal and done by a church employee at the front door. Parents are strongly encouraged not to bring a sick child to school, and obviously sick children are sent home (or not accepted at drop-off). The real world problem is that often children are contagious before they look sick. I am not aware of staff screening policies but am confident that it is very conservative. Facilities are in a old, land marked church office building and are limited as such. They are newly renovated.

The building that houses the school needs some work but the floors that school are on are brand new. The school has gone through extensive renovations in the last 2 years. The only negative is the elevator in the building is horrible.

Be normal. If your child was to have a melt down I would recommend focusing on calming your child gently and not getting flustered and blaming other kids. I feel the school does observe the kind of parent you are in these types of situations.
