Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

teachers work with the children as a large group, small group, and individually. Children are given extra help, more work, or just enough depending on their specific need.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

Our school does age appropriate testing and parents are sent home copies of the test. We have open house, parent conferences, and parents are welcome any time to visit, volunteer, observe their child.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
- Parents in classroom early on

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

We do have some crying children when they first start. Some take longer than others to adjust. We (meaning just about all of our staff) take time to rock, console, take a walk around the building, look outside, and simply play with those who have a hard time adjusting. It takes time, patience, and love.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Our center uses redirection. Children will be redirected to do another activity. If they are hurting some one, we have time out. It is a minute per ther age. We discuss what it is that got them there and how we can do it better next time. Some children just need a look :) or a smile to let them know we are watching them. Praising works toward not having to discipline.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would say to child a that it is ok to have more than one friend and that maybe we can let child b play too.

We would also have child a pick another friend to do something with.

Food Allergies

- We keep special snacks for allergic children

- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child

Medications

- We keep their medication on hand at all times
