School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

"Children are to be respected
Children possess unusual sensitivity for absorbing knowledge from their environment.
The most important years of growth are the first 6 years of life when unconscious learning is gradually brought to a conscious level.
Children have a deep love and need for purposeful work. They work not for profit or compliments as adults do but for the sake of the activity alone. When they accomplish an activity, they achieve a very important goal: their own development of mental, physical and psychological powers. "

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

"The Morning Program (8:30 am to 12:00 pm)
A typical day involves a three-hour “work cycle” which includes arrival, greeting and setting in for the day, lessons with the various Montessori materials (we included an example of a child’s metal inset work on the folder cover), periodic spontaneous group activity if it naturally arises out of the needs of the children (this may include gathering to hear a story or a walk about the neighborhood), snack that the children often help prepare, serve and clean up, and outdoor time on the school’s beautiful shaded playground. Practical life skills, sensorial materials, language, math, music, botany, biology, art and cultural awareness are part of the Montessori curriculum and such activities are built into the classroom.

Notes on Schedule and Extended Care

Notes

"The Extended Day Program (3:00 to 6:00 pm) AMH also offers a program to provide full day care for children enrolled in the 3/4 Day Program. The extended day staff oversees the remainder of the day after 3:00 pm dismissal and plan thematic art, music, cooking and educational game activities. Ample opportunity for outside time is given. The Early Care Add-On We welcome children as early as 8:00 am; they will be greeted by the morning classroom assistant. This program is often used by working parents who find they need to drop off earlier and is available for a small fee. It is generally available on a drop-in basis for a separate fee. THE EARLY CARE: Additional charge to the tuitions listed above for the 2006-2007 school year is $425 • Hours: 8:00 am to 8:30 am • Available to any child regardless of age
