School Philosophy & Day in the Life
School Philosophy and Mission
Montessori is designed to help all children reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace. A classroom whose children have varying abilities is a community in which everyone learns from one another and everyone contributes. Children ages 3 through 6 are placed together, forming a community in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones. Moreover, multi-age grouping allows each child to find his or her own pace without feeling â??aheadâ?? or â??behindâ?? in relation to peers.
Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline and love of learning. Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education
Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School
We start our day with circle, taking attendance by asking each child a question ie what is your favorite color. Songs follow, we outline our day, and split the children into two groups, one group staying in the classroom where lessons include sounds, math, matching, and free time. The other group goes into the Practical Life Room, where there are lessons for pouring, cutting, sponging, sequencing, art, and free time. After 45 minutes, they change classrooms. We introduce Spanish, sign language, science projects, and geography. Good manners and respect for themselves and others is practiced each day in hands-on things like putting back lessons, cleaning up after themselves after snack and lunch, asking to be excused, yes please, no thank you.
Quality of Teaching
Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching
Individualized Teaching
Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students
We do not present a program and expect your child to fit into it - they work at their own pace but are continually offered challenging lessons.
Home School Connection
Director's Comments
We encourage parent participation, parent-teacher conferences. We send out periodical letters just letting parents know what we'll be doing in the next few months, any concerns, new announcements. We send home books for our beginning readers to read with their parents. We have 2-3 family nights, ie "North America Night" where the children shared their knowledge of the continents and North America followed by a chili dinner, The solar system presentation followed by an ice cream social, and our summer production where the children make all the sets, learn songs and dances and present it to all our families - this year is Enchantment under the Sea - they made starfish, paper plate fish, octopuses, surf boards and sang Surfin USA, Wipe Out, and other sea related songs with a "did you know" presentation of facts about fish, the ocean etc. This was followed by a weinie roast, serving hot dogs, chips and root beer floats. All these programs are open for families and guests. We enjoy our families getting to know each other.

Discipline, Health and Safety
Overview
Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline
At the end of the first week, we let the parents know how their children did, addressing any potential problems. We stay in contact the second week, by the third week the children need to be on board with the program though we always reiterate rules etc. By the end of the first month, if there were discipline problems, we need to see improvement.
