Parents' Comments
Parent #1
The teachers for 2 and 3 years old are great at communicating what the child did that day, good and bad. For 2 - 3/not yet potty trained kids, you get a daily sheet with toileting, nap time, snack consumption and activities. I also like that both the administrator and the director know me and my child and comment on what my child did that day at school. They post photos on the bulletin board in the main entrance for all parents to see. By letting me know about my child's interaction with other children, I can reinforce those issues at home. The same goes for letting me know what activities she enjoyed so we can do them at home too.
Parent #2
In general I feel that if your child fits in with the administrative needs of the school it is a really good place. Many children do well there and are well prepared for Kindergarten. All the teachers we knew were very warm with the children and the children seemed to also like their teachers. I felt that administrative decisions especially those related to classroom placement were mysterious and not necessarily in the best interest of the child. Placement was also made many months prior to the children moving up not allowing for changes made in the interrum time. I also feel that the administration was relatively unflexible once a decision had been made. It also seems that some parents had more power than others to make changes happen in the classroom. The younger three-year-old room has had challenges year after year but the older classrooms seem to have been much more stable over the years. I found that communication especially when we started came in drips and drabs and frequently needed clarification -- there was not an orientation night for new parents so it took a while for us to figure out the double check-in system etc. Later we found that so much communication came by paper it was hard to be sure if the parent who didn't do pick-up got the information. Information that was sent out was not always clear.
Parent #3
Overall I am very pleased with the school. However, I would like more of a parent community, play dates, parent involvement, etc. I would like to see school's policies published on line and accessable. Also, I would like more daily or weekly communication on what my son is learning or what he has improved upon.
Parent #4
Garner has a strong academic program, but needs more conflict resolution and cooperation activities. The teachers are competent with a few that are inspiring. The director is capable and professional. The facilities are fantastic!
Parent #5
My daughter had a few biting incidents. The teacher wrote up a form that clearly states what happened, etc. She was also very sensitive in how she dealt with the situation with me. She gave me some suggestions on how to discourage such behavior. My daughter does not bite anymore - in fact, she is developing into a very caring and loving child.

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Overall, Garner teachers are effective. They are very structured which avoids disputes and provides predictability. I would have liked to see a more time spent teaching kids how to get along with others.
Parent #2
My son has told us several times that he loves his school and his teachers (without us asking him). It would be nice to have questions about how the children feel about the school, what they like and don't like.
Parent #3
There were times that I felt the teachers interpretation of behavior was inaccurate leading me to believe that they did not have a very good understanding of my child.
Parent #4
there are several teachers and some are present in the morning, others in the afternoon and depending on whether I do drop off or pick up I may interact with one more than the other.

Savvy Source's Comments
Bright Horizons offers a variety of school-home connection materials. One is www.brighthorizons.com/growing. This is a site where parents can find resources, information, and programs designed to help their child grow, learn, and discover. From cultivating a love of books or channeling their child’s natural curiosity into scientific inquiry to discovering valuable parenting tips and ideas, this parent resource Web site was designed with parents and families in mind.
Our program for learning, The World at Their Fingertips, also has a World at Home component. The World at Home provides a database of activities for infants through school age children to do at home with parents, many that naturally flow from everyday life. The activities cover the curriculum spectrum - language, science, math, social skills and so on. Parents can draw off of this database to extend what is happening in the classrooms. They may also submit activity ideas to share with all of our faculty and families around the world.
Bright Horizons has also teamed up with The Learning Network to offer Bright Horizons EarlyLearner, a wonderful online child development support service. Bright Horizons EarlyLearner allows parents and teachers to track each child's development and create an online portfolio. A portfolio includes parent-teacher Child Observation Records that map the child's growth and a journal to record experiences and insights from parents and teachers. Bright Horizons EarlyLearner also includes:
• information about development
• classroom activities targeted to the child's development
• tips for parents and teachers
• opportunities to question experts
Bright Horizons EarlyLearner is integrated into The World at Their Fingertips approach to parent conferences and tracking development: a partnership approach designed to create a shared point of view on the child's development and goals for success.
Children in our infant and toddler programs also receive daily notes sharing some of the day’s highpoints as well as information on meals and diaper changes. Each child (infant through preschool) also receives a journal chronicling their time at the center. Journals are an interactive communication tool for parents and teachers to record highlights of both center and home life.
Bright Horizons has an open door policy so parents can visit any time. Annual parent teacher conferences are also conducted for each child in the center.

My child separated easily.
Parent #2
Questions on teacher personality, competency, training and how our children feel about them is needed to provide depth to the survey. Also, questions need to have a 'doesn't apply' or 'not applicable' option
Parent #3
This school does not provide a ready-made community. We did develope some nice friendships with other families as the children developed relationships at school.
Parent #4
There may be a parent community but I am not aware of it - informally I arrange play dates and share information with some parents that I know.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
I think that the bathrooms should be cleaned more frequently especially for the Honeybee and Panda children (since most of the kids in this program are newly potty-trained). Kids pee on the toilet and on the floor.
I think they should also have refrigerators for the lunches. This way, the milk in the lunches and other food items do not get spoiled.
Parent #2
The facilities are fabulous! The kids have everything they need here! Discipline is almost always handled appropriately. All of my difficulties are probably that of a worried mother. However, especially since this is a facility where children attend for many hours a day, more time could be spent teaching kids to cooperate and understand each other.
Parent #3
The front door has a security lock, but should also be manned at all times for people coming in and out of the building. The shared bathroom in honeybees/pandas needs to be attended to every 30 minutes as the toilets and floor are often dirty.
Parent #4
Conflicts were resolved quickly but some children needed more support than they were getting in really learning the skills of conflict resolution. The three-year-old out-door play space is the only one that doesn't have bikes and trikes.
Parent #5
Because there are several other classrooms with children of other ages, I really don't know about sick children or the equipment in those classrooms.
