Director's Comments
Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
We are part of a larger organization, Alternatives in Action, which was founded as a youth development organization.
In February 2001, a group of experts in the field of early care and education and a cohort of high-school students who were interested in going into the field and/or giving back to their community by caring for young children designed and built HOME Sweet HOME.
Today, youth who choose to apply to the program volunteer in the classroom and provide supervised support to the children, including one-on-one support, setting up the environment and activities, leading activities with children, and generally supporting staff.
These youth receive formal training on child development, ages and stages, and developmentally appropriate practices with young children. Youth annually present to the parents what they have learned and how they have been engaged in the program and the lives of the young children.
This aspect of our program has proven to be very beneficial to the children, youth, and staff alike.
Please contact the director if you have any other questions regarding this supportive and exciting aspect of our program.
School Philosophy & Day in the Life
School Philosophy and Mission
HOME Sweet HOME Mission: The mission of the Home Sweet Home Child Care Center is to provide a safe, nurturing and supportive environment for the children. We are committed to recognizing the individuality of each child.
Our program promotes individual growth using learning experiences that allow each child to develop at his or her own rate.
Our program, curriculum and activities reflect each developmental stage. Home Sweet Home staff and youth are dedicated to providing quality childcare. We will build partnerships with parents to support the safety and development of each child.
The children's schedule throughout the day provides for a balance between active and quiet play; individual, small and large group exercises; and indoor and outdoor activities. Such learning and play activities include: cooking, gardening, dramatic play, children's literature, block building, art projects, science/math exploration, manipulatives, nature experiences and walking field trips.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching
Individualized Teaching
Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students
Because we have a multi-age classroom, children are strategically placed in two separate groups during parts of the day, including circle-time and project-time. Twice per year teachers assess each individual child's full range of development (social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language). Teachers partner with families and parents to support every individual child. Teachers and volunteers work one-on-one with children to support their individual needs.

Overview
Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline
Most importantly, we practice positive discipline, in which the teacher describes the behavior or alternative that is desired, rather than focusing on the negative behavior. Our overall goal in discipline is to support children's self-control.
Detailed discipline policy:
1) Broken rule or expectation that does not involve intentionally hurting self or others: Two warnings, with second warning explaining the consequence if the behavior continues. A 3rd occasion of the behavior results in the agreed upon consequence. Staff attempt to provide 'natural' consequences such as not being able to continue play in sand if child is throwing sand. A time out is a last option if 'natural' consequence is not available or working.
2) Intentionally hurting another child or self: Children are separated to ensure safety, and the child who was hurt is given attention to make sure he/she is OK. the child who intentionally hurt another child is asked to sit calmly in a comfortable place (referred to as 'time-out' or 'calm-down time'). Once the child is able to calm down, the child is asked to sit quietly for 1-2 minutes. Teacher or trained youth have a conversation with child about why they needed to sit down and what an appropriate response or alternative would have been. The two children are brought together so that the child who was hurt can make requests and express feelings, and the child who hurt another can respond and apologize if he/she wishes.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
The teacher would explain to the child being left out that sometimes children decide to play with new friends as well. The teacher would then try to make a compromise between the two children, about a time in which Child A and B or Children A, B, and C all could play together again later that day (such as after a given activity or amount of time).
