School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

The phiolosophy behind Cornerstone was built on the premise that Early Childhood Education should be a healthy balance between developmental and academic readiness. Creative learning, hands on age appropriate materials support children intitated activites and teacher-led activities. This school was founded by an Early Childhood Educator with over 18 years expereince and a mom who wanted the best for her own child and the community.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

Our core 1/2 day program is from 9-12:30. Children are greeted with a morning activity and a time to transition into school. Circle time follows in all classrooms and age appropriate learning and materials support various age groups. Outside playtime follows and then a morning snack. Our Art-Ademics learning time is when letters, numbers, concepts, science, cooking, library, music etc. all take place and again each program supports the curriculum for each age level. Another outside time follows and then lunch. Dismissal at 12:30 takes place after lunch time and for those continuing their day a quiet rest time/activity time is given. Our extended day program allows for pick up anytime up until 6:00 pm. There is an Extended Day Schedule that supports children having a longer day but this is NOT A DAYCARE! Come see for yourself!

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

By keeping the teacher/child ratio well below state mandated requirements, teachers have the opportunity to work with children in very small groups and one on one.

Home School Connection

Home-School Connection

OVERALL RATING (3.0) Three Stars
Conducts a parent-teacher meeting at start of school year Three Stars
Director's Comments

Communication between school and home is most important. I have realized over the years that the Owner, not a school's "director" which is really a label, is the most valuable administrator within a school family. The owner/founder etc. is the glue to keeping families happy and comfortable. When visiting a school ask yourself, Who owns this school? A franchise? A Corporation etc? Cornerstone Preschool holds two parent teacher conferences per year and when necessary will schedule other conferences. Telephone communication between family and home is important as well. We also have a Parent's Association which allows for parents to participate in their child's education here at the school. A Room Parent Program, Community Programs and school events are all a part of us building a sense of Community within our school.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

We want the transition from home to school to be a healthy one. Each child is unique and therefore each seperation is unique. NEVER does a child sit and cry. We may call the parents back so that the transition time is less and less. We may ask a parent to wait a few minutes before heading out after drop off. We encourage our families to call us during the day to check in when morning drop off poses challenges for them or their little ones.

Drop-in Policy

- During school parents are welcomed as the school has an open door policy

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

We NEVER use "time-out." When necessary and children need to move their energy, they may step away from the group acitivity until they can re-join. In very rare incidences, does a child need to visit the office.
