Director's Comments

Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
Each child is admitted to our program with their best interest in mind. It is our intention to provide the best for our students educationally and spiritually. To achieve that we admit each child hand in hand with the parents in an open dialogue about the needs of the child and family.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

We want to provide an excellent education for our students as well as develop their faith and sense of community. We encourage leadership and provide activities to strengthen self confidence. We have a structured curriculum laced with experiences in art, creativity, music, and physical activities. We learn, letters, numbers, writing as well as paint, cut, play and create.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

We begin each day with activities to transition between home and school. Each class will have several activities to choose from as students arrive at school. 30 minutes later, we begin chapel with singing, pledges, memory verses, stories and prayers. Older children have 30 minutes of outdoor time, running, climbing, riding, chasing and playing with friends. Younger children will have snack.
As the older children arrive back to their classrooms for circle, snack, and work time, the younger children will have their outdoor time before returning to circle and work time.
They will all be learning letters and numbers with activities in art, music and science. Before you know it, our 4 hour program comes to an end between 11:45 and 12:pm.

Director's Comments

Though, our teachers are very involved in our program, we do provide opportunities for students to explore and create on their own as well as being led and faciilitated by teachers. We try to balance teacher led activities with play and exploration.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

To help students succeed we notice children who are in need of either more or less challenging activities. We adapt or enhance activities as needed. We spend some extra time with those who want some "help" or more to do. We will also work with the parents to offer ideas of things that can be done in their everyday lives to support what we are doing in school.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

Parents recieve newsletters, emails and conversations directly from teachers, administrators and the director. We have several evenings showcasing students work or performances. Conferences are arranged at anytime the parent desires. We have several "parties" and festivities each year involving parents.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

Most children experience separation anxiety. We advise parents to talk to their children openly and confidently before bringing their child the first day of school. We reccomend bringing their child to the center before school starts to help them feel familiar with the enviroment. We also have the parent leave with a hug and a kiss and head directly out the door! We are experienced in helping children through the first few days of school and will take good care of them. We continue to encourage the parent to be confident and reassure their child that they are loved. A lingering parent usually makes the seperation anxiety last longer. Some children respond to praise and rewards for smooth drop offs. Always feel free to call the center to check on your child.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

We try to teach the right way for children to handle disputes with one another. Before problems arise, we do role playing with puppets, dolls or each other. We encourage the children to use their words to express their frustrations or anger. We help them label their feelings and express them. We help them think of different ways to solve their problems. We also look at the environment to see if we need to change something, add something or take something out. If hitting or pushing become involved we will use a short time out to diffuse the situation. We will then converse with the student to identify what else could have been done besides hitting. We try to redirect the activity before anything physical occurs. We will also use a reward system for those students choosing to use good choices.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

Comforting child b, we would talk with child a and child c asking them if child b can play with them, explaining that we can have lots of friends using teachers for example. If inclusion is not going happen, teachers would help child b to play with other classmates. If child a and c included child b praise would be abunant!. We like to point out that including friends is very nice. We usually find if children are given a choice in a positive supportive tone, they are more inclined to respond favorably.

Food Allergies

- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child

Medications

- We do not dispense over the counter medications. However, we will give prescription medication if it meets all liscensing criteria.
