Director's Comments
Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
We suggest that parents observe the school and ask the teachers any questions they may have. We have very limited openings and cannot guarantee spots to all applicants.
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
I cannot say more positive things about this school. My child does not have to be in preschool because I am a stay at home mom, but I loved this school so much that I enrolled her at age 2. I have never regretted it. She loves going to school each and every day and we will sorely miss Bayside after kindergarten.
Parent #2
Weakness - hours of operations. for pre-school, 9:15 to 11:45. not suitable for working parents.
School Philosophy & Day in the Life
School Philosophy and Mission
Bayside Montessori is a non-profit corporation that was started in 1982 to meet the continued need for Montessori education in Alameda. Our head teachers are trained in the Montessori Method and hold certificates from the American Montessori Society and all our teachers have many years of teaching experience.
We offer three programs for children between the ages of two to six years of age. The early preschool class is designed as a two-year program for two to four year olds and meets four mornings for two and a half hours per day. Children between three and one-half and six years attend our preschool program five days per week for three hours a day, with extended hours available in the afternoon program. Classroom placement is based upon teacher and staff recommendation.
Bayside Montessori's programs include art, music, language skills, math skills, daily living activities, cultural units, small and large motor development, and the development of sensorial discrimination.
Maria Montessori developed the Montessori Method at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a physician and scientist she observed that children had highly absorbent minds and natural learning potential. Montessori realized that young children are in a sensitive period for order. That order is essential for their sense of well-being and helps them make sense out of the world. At the same time children need to move and learn by manipulating objects in their environment. When children are allowed freedom, they will meet their own needs, increase their attention span, and learn to make responsible choices. The classroom materials are self-correcting so children will have a successful experience in each undertaking and move systematically from concrete to abstract activities. Children work on an individual basis so they can proceed at their own pace and foster an innate sense of self-motivation and joy of learning.
In a Montessori class the teacher prepares the environment to meet the needs of the children and allows them to explore independently. The overview of the classroom and careful observation are the touchstones of teaching, permitting the children to guide the teacher as to what their needs are. Each child learns through experience rather than being taught by the teacher and therefore develops a sense of self worth and his or her capabilities. The teacher creates an atmosphere of respect for the children and the environment.
At Bayside Montessori we take great pride in our programs and welcome you to visit our school. We do not discriminate with regard to race, religion or ethnicity.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
The teachers at Bayside are outstanding, both in the early preschool classroom and in the preschool classroom. I am always astonished at the conferences at how well they understand my child.
Parent #2
In the early preschool class, there are 2 teachers. The head teacher has been there for over 25 years, and is great with the children. The assistant is a little newer and quieter, and her role is more to help the head teacher, so there is not much communication with her about my child. That being said, she is still very kind and my daughter loves her as well. The two teachers compliment each other nicely.
Parent #3
The lead teacher of the early preschool program is fabulous and has more than 20 years of experience. She does a tremendous job of setting the tone, orchstrating a warm, friendly and very competent environment and mentoring other teachers.

Director's Comments
Parents observe their child in the classroom twice a year. Parent/teacher conferences are held twice a year. We also have a 'Parent Night' each year when parents come to the classroom and work with their child. Parent education meetings occur once a year. Newsletters are sent home at least once a month. Parents are contacted by the school whenever an issue arises at school. Parents are also encouraged to call the teachers with any concerns they may have. Teachers are always available to discuss these concerns. The teachers are happy to discuss kindergarten placement with parents who ask for advice in this regard.

Director's and Parents' Comments
Director's Comments
New children meet with the teachers (and their parents) one week before the start of the school. We 'phase-in' the children in small groups to ease the separation process. This goes on for 2 weeks. The teachers provide extra attention to children who struggle with separation. Parents are consulted as to what separation techniques work best for their child.
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Because there is a set routine in the classroom, parent visits can be disruptive. Parents are welcomed at any time, however, especially to volunteer for projects. Some parents even come up with their own projects and lead the class. Parents do holiday presentations and even dress up as Santa at the holiday time.
Parent #2
Bayside is run by extremely seasoned, well-trained, warm and welcoming staff. Many of the questions raised above, while good, didn't overly concern us as we had absolute confidence in the teachers adn program. The school is fairly structured, with specific parent-teacher conferences, two parent observation periods, a family fundraiser, a family picnic and other assorted opportunities to observe/engage with the students while they are in class. We were more than happy with the arrangement and have never felt the need for more personalized attention. Our child's happy, enthusiastic and inspired attitude assures us his needs are being met.

Like many buildings in Alameda, the school is housed in a very old home. It shows the usual wear and tear that an older building shows. It has never affected my daughter in any way.
