School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Children learn through doing, doing should be fun!

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

The school opens at 6:00. Preschool begins at 8:30. Each age is separated and will begin their day in one of several classrooms. Each classroom carries a different theme, math, language art (reading readiness), science, art, music, library, and the gym.
The children will rotate classrooms every thirty minutes. That allows the children to see new and different stimuli rather than sitting in one room all day. As they progress through each classroom they will work on that classroom's theme. Several times during the day they will have gym time where they will ride toys and bounce balls. They will also go outside to the playground for extended exercise on the various toys. Lunch is at 11:00 and then a nap until 1:45. Next they will have their snack and play outside for 30 minutes. The afternoon is much like the morning with the children moving through the different rooms, Computers, library, art, and science. Several times each month they will meet in the gym for a play presented by different artists, a musician who will preform, or Animals on Wheels who will show off her latest strange animal.
Their day will end when mom or dad drops in to pick up.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

We develop our own curriculum and are able to individualize it to the needs of each child.
We set goals for the children, goals they should reach before entering kindergarten. We periodically evaluate each child's progress as they move through the program and report their progress to the parents.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

We evaluate each child's progress based on goals we have set. We share those evaluations with parents and discuss what things can be done at home to augment the learning they receive at the school. We encourage parents to schedule meetings with teachers to discuss their child's development.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
- Parents in classroom early on

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

Though rare, separation anxiety may occur for the first several days a child begins attending. We have found that allowing the child to spend time with one adult most of the day as her "helper" eases the transition. Children in a new environment see other children as threatening and they fear them. In a new environment they need a friend that will protect them. That staff person fulfills that need.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Discipline and guidance should be consistent and based on an understanding of the individual needs and development of the child and should be directed toward teaching the child acceptable behavior.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

I would probably talk to child A about how his friend's feelings can be hurt if he didn't play with him. I would suggest a game the three might like to play.
