Director's Comments

Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
Discovery Montessori is based in this community since 1983. The school experience is introduced as an extension of home life. This is reinforced with home visits by teachers, parent volunteer activities and events, as well as a newsletter and parent meetings.

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
School is excellent. Wonderful teachers - skilled and caring. Fantastic classrooms and materials...plus evolving enrichment programs (such as music, language, dance). We've been part of the school for over 2 years - we feel lucky our son is there.

Parent #2
I love this school. It's an extremely nurturing environment for both of my kids. My son has had some typical boy issues, mainly with focus and the ability to want to work vs. play, and the staff have been extremely patient, encouraging, and have helped him to develop his love of learning. The community continues to get stronger each year. Great place to have your kids.

Parent #3
This is a great school! Great teachers, great atmosphere. The LONGEST session is from 8:45-3:15pm.
NOTE: They following the same school breaks at the Seattle Public School, however, so you have to plan for backup childcare or take your vacations then. You pay monthly regardless of school breaks.

Parent #4
Strengthes: Supportive, kid-centered philosphy, very experienced principle and teachers, strong community of families, positive discipline with a focus on developing independence, nice kids, excellent music program Weaknesses: This is not an accelerated curriculum, though there is individual attention to children's own levels. If you want to push early true academics at the expense of movement and play, that is not the focus.

Parent #5
When the kids leave the school, they have an incredible ability to focus, follow directions and are excited about learning. Most are very ready for Kindergarten.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Children are naturally motivated to explore and learn all the time. Our school program is designed around the needs of the child to express creatively, pursue understanding, and develop character. Discovery Montessori School offers an environment which will provide for the broad spectrum development of young children through free choice, progressing from "hands-on" activity to abstract thought.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

Children Progress Freely within Daily Schedule & Routine:

8:45: A child 2.5 to 6 years of age would arrive with a group of 18 to 20 children to explore together with independent choice of activities and to gather together with a group time for culture, movement, and song.
The morning concludes with outdoor play and early pick up at 11:45.

11:30 to 12:15: Lunchtime for Full Time Children

12:15: Afternoon arrivals

Those who attend after lunch continue with an afternoon session allowing new depth of experience and growth in all skills. The afternoon outdoor time is followed with the departure at 3:15.

Morning & Afternoon: Snack time is available as free choice. Outdoor activities are shared as a group.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Each child is validated for the current interests and skills shown for chosen tasks. Observation of this provides basis for continuing lessons which are documented. Children are encouraged to return to work which has been demonstrated in order to build skills. In this way every child is different from others and will excel in their own ways. Children like to succeed and also like a challenge. Working on challenging lessons provides new skills.

Teachers build communication with parents from the beginning of each child's attendance by means of verbal accounts, home visits, written summaries. We report school experiences and include home activities in our learning process through the child's sharing and parent involvement. Parent-Teacher conferences are held in the spring prior to enrollment for the next year. A room parent supports the communication and involvement for families and Parent Meetings bring together the Parents and Teachers for exchange of ideas.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.9) Four And Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Self-Discipline is a guiding principle. The Child is motivated to succeed and to do the right thing. The community atmosphere is conducive to friendly lessons in good behavior and making choices to benefit others. Parent-Teacher communication supports success.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

This free association is accepted and children learn that it is safe to make choices. This choice is usually varied from one activity to another and does not imply that a child would only play with one other child for the day.
Also, any child can ask to watch or join in an activity and it is the option of the child who is responsible for the activity to allow other children to watch or help.

Director's Comments

Comments

Children step out of the home into a school community as an individual who will quickly gain confidence and show independence and responsibility. Montessori curriculum and practices build the character and intellect of the child. Parents can encourage this growth and work with us to see children succeed. The school curriculum is designed for a 3 year experience and prepares the child for successful entry into any Elementary School program. Continued education in Montessori Schools is available and appropriate for many children.

Age/Child Requirements

Child must be 2 years and 8 months to enroll.

Child must be potty trained to enroll.

Inquiries accepted from October 15 onwards.

Director's views on diversity:
Diversity adds to our awareness as people of culture. Families who share cultural attributes in the school setting help children increase appreciation of all people. Building the early experience in diverse perspectives builds flexibility of thinking and open minds.
