Director's Comments

Question to director: Do you have any additional thoughts on what parents should consider when looking at your school? Is there any advice that you would like to provide to prospective parents?
Educate yourself on child brain development. Our expectations of young children are often propelled by getting into the 'right' school instead of what is a good fit for the child.

Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Wit h one daughter in college (Hamlin Gateway UC Davis) and another in high school (Hamlin Urban) it is still our knowledge that the best teacher the girls ever had was at this school. She gave them a foundation for a joy in learning, an expectation of respect, and so much laughter and kindness: none of us have ever forgotten the girls' years at Kids Club. They were incomparable.

Parent #2
It is a very caring environment with lots of room to explore and create - my child loves it.

Parent #3
Joanne, the woman who owns kids club...is meant to be a preschool teacher. She is educated, bright, happy, caring and engaged. She tried to fly under the radar and not get carried away in the preschool hysteria. I like that they LOVE each child and teach them continually.

Director's Comments

From experience I have learned that young children, 2-5, need time to trust, to observe, to get to know a teacher's rhythm. They do this best through free and unstructured activity, by mid-year many, if not all, happily and comfortably come to structured activities by their own volition confidently.

Separation

OVERALL RATING (5.0) Five Stars
Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Abbreviated schedule at start of school year
- Parents in classroom early on
- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

The best way is for the parent to stay with the child until they are comfortable. Abbreviating the schedule 30 minutes/day; 45 minutes/day; 60 minutes/day by day 3, etc. If a parent is comfortable, a confident goodbye and notice to be close by in case we have to call for a pick up.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.8) Four And Half Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Redirection - a few words to discourage behavior which hurts others, self or destroys property. With older kids, we often talk to the group about what happened and talk about ideas and words they could use instead.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would help Child 'B' find another activity or friend to join with. We address how child 'A' could have been a bit more diplomatic (i.e., Id like to play with Child 'C' today, maybe we could play later). We would also help Child 'B' understand that sometimes we all want to play with just one other child and sometimes we can try to join in.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parent #3
No place was better for our children. The combination of expertise and fun is unmatched anywhere else. Now that we are on the very far side of preschool and have heard scores of people's preschool experiences, we continue to know how extraordinarily lucky we were to be at Kids Club.
