Parents' Comments
Parent #1
There are a lot of new families this year ('06-'07), so I think it will take awhile for the parents to be more of a community. It is a co-op, so you get out what you put into it. This school is not for everybody. It is not a structured, contained environment, and it can seem chaotic at times. But it also lets kids be kids. My child is learning so much about social interaction (and with kids from different countries), he has lots of room to explore, and the teachers are loving.

Parent #2
It is not a very large space, but that should be changing this coming summer. There is to be a new space for it on the UCSD campus.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Our educational philosophy is based on the premise that children learn through hands-on involvement with activities about which they are motivated to learn.

At ICNS, we provide an environment in which child-initiated activities are encouraged and developmentally appropriate materials are utilized

Art, Creative Movement, Dramatic Play, Science, Language Arts, and Math activities are all included.

Children gain social, emotional, physical and cognitive competence through these experiences

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

A DAY AT ICNS INCLUDES

Child-directed Play at multiple learning and activity stations, including art easels, play dough, water tables, blocks, puzzles, and building tools.

A healthy, nutritious snack

Circle-Time singing and movement led by teachers

Small Group Time - a special time set aside for teacher-directed age appropriate activities. Usually a project or activity set-up by the teacher to stimulate learning and experimenting.

Outside Play Time - Time for more fun and challenges outside.

Story Time - Children are gathered together for a story read by one of the staff shortly before parents arrive to take them home.

Director's Comments

COOPERATIVE PHILOSOPHY What is a cooperative? A cooperative (or "coop") is one in which each family takes an active role in all aspects of the program. This includes working in the classroom and performing various jobs at the school. Why choose a cooperative? By being directly involved in your child's preschool experience, you set a precedent for making your child's education an integral part of your family's life, and you send a strong message to your child that his or her education is important. An additional benefit of cooping - it allows you become acquainted with the other children and families - friendships which often endure beyond the child's stay at ICNS. Coop parents have the responsibility of working in the classroom approximately 2.5 days per month. ICNS maintains a 1 to 5-adult/student ratio with caring cooping parents and a staff highly trained in early childhood education.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
While it is child- and play-based curriculum generally; the teachers arrive with agendas. Should the child choose not to participate, they may quietly do another activity. The teachers lead discussion and lessons, but keep it fun and non-stressful.

Parent #2
The day is mostly play-based activities, with stations, and some small group work. There is circle/music time and story time every day.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The teachers are quite different in how they handle the children, which is good, I think; for the kids to be able to follow direction from different personalities. They are all VERY hands on, and do seem to arrive with the appropriate energy each day. It is a more play-based preschool and the teachers are always up for matching the fabulous imaginations of their students.

Parent #2
There are 4 regular teachers in the classroom, and they have different strengths. Some are better at working with parents than others, but they are all energetic and sensitive with the kids.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Children are encouraged to work things out, and the teachers work with them to make sure that both kids are happy with the outcome and can continue playing without further issue. There has never been a time when I was concerned for the safety of my child, and he usually comes away with further understanding of what the conflict was about.

Parent #2
The school will be moving to a new site for the 2007-2008 school year, so the facilities will be different... and new.
