| • The year of Kindergarten is one of completion. The child masters all areas. The Kindergartners are in a mixed-age class. The mixed-age classes provide our Kindergarteners with abundant opportunities to develop leadership skills, responsibility, experience a greater social diversity. Another key point is interest and readiness for advance work. If a child is not ready to move on, they are not left behind or made to feel like a failure, and if a child is advanced, the sky is the limit. |

The BCMS program excels in every way. One of the most impressive is the way they deal with social issues, conflict resolution, any issue that might come up, whether with the children, or among the staff. Our director is always -- always -- looking for ways to improve the school, for the children and for wonderful people who work with her. This is her life's work and she cares for everyone in her organization, and it shows. She looks each child in the eye when talking to them; does special things for her staff to make sure they know they are appreciated. It's a tremendous thing that so many other organizations do poorly.
We spent 10 months at another school where getting answers to simple questions was like pulling teeth. The school's open door policy and her insistence on working with all parents is a breath of fresh air. My daughter, our family, feel completely happy and at home at BCMS.
As for the Montessori aspect: this is the real deal. The aunt of one of our teachers studied directly under Maria Montessori. The teachers are all excellent teachers, and Montessori-certified.
Finally, I can't stress how much care and love one feels when walking into the school. It was an agonizing decision to pull my daughter out of our last school -- but I didn't realize how much my daughter could enjoy school until we came to BCMS.
Parent #2
I am a big fan of the Montessori philosophy of teaching so I sought only Montessori schools. BCMS is great b/c Montessori is the form of education but they are an "all in one" school. The child does not have to be potty-trained. There are warm meals and snacks. The hours are great regardless of a parent's every changing schedule. The staff is kind and attentive.
Parent #3
Teachers, staff, and director are all seasoned and professionals. This is my 3rd child here at BCMS. I toured other schools and this is the perfect one. They know how to handle any situations at arise for my childrens needs.
Parent #4
The director is hands on. She is always working on projects to improve the school. The latest one is a 8ft salt water reef tank. The chidlren love it. She is always around to support the parents and her staff. The children get all they need. I love the parent community.
Parent #5
This school works like clockwork. The daily schedule is followed to a tee and the children no exactly what to expect and what is expected of them. Education and freedom of creativity make this school an excellent choice for every child. For example, if your child does not want to do circle time, they can move to a breakout room and play with puzzles (while being supervised by a teacher). Children learn at their own rate and are never forced into any situation.
The school is clean and the playground is a heaven of joy, with bikes, toys, climbing structure and lots of teachers on hand to guard against accidents.
Mealtime is a joy (and has really helped our mealtime at home) Tables are set up restaurant style with 6 students to a table with one teacher. At mealtime students are encouraged to discuss their day, taught manners and sharing. Each student clears their own plates at end of lunch.
Nap Room is open to any child who feels the need. It is not mandatory, but encouraged for the young one.
The electronic buzzer into the school and the electronic punch in and out insures the safety of my child.
Lastly, the director is constantly purchasing new toys, books, puzzles and furniture to keep the school up to date and exciting.
Parent #6
BXMS is a school where my child is loved and supported. She gets up every morning (including Saturday) and asks if she is going to school, and is excited to be going.
Parent #7
I'm on my second child at BCMS. I have been associated with the school for 7 years in one form or another and my children have thrived at BCMS. My son made lasting friendships. He still wants to come by and fill his teachers in on how he doing now. My daughter attends now and is also doing well. She is absorbing amazing amounts of knowledge and thru her coloring you can see her fine motor skills really developing for writing.
The strengths of the school are the nurturing and devoted teachers and staff, the diverse facilities, fresh cooked meals and snacks, potty training, on-site field trips, bikes and lots of physical exercise and an abundance of simulating and fun toys.
Weakness - Nothing that I can think of. The administration tries very hard to accomodate all reasonable requests, but as we all know, you can't please call the people all the time. But BCMS sure tries!
Parent #8
Big City MS has been the best choice I could have made for both of my children. The school is beautiful and welcoming from the inside (decorated with the childrens art work), the staff is warm, loving, affectionate and takes amazing care of the children and the director is a gifted educator that is constantly interacting with the children, the teachers and the parents to ensure that the children are getting the very best education possible.
There are three classrooms with three very gifted Montessori teachers and it shows - the children come home from a very early age with an eagerness to take up knowledge that is quite amazing. They learn about everything from letters and numbers to botany, geography and astronomy and they actually understand very complex ideas.
Parent #9
My child had a loving, patient teacher. Both of my kids love her. She knows the development of each child and is always available to talk about my child and how he/she is doing and how I can best support them at home. The place is spotless, the serve healthy meals, very safe! The staff is always working to make it better for the children and working on the connection between home and school. There is a lot of opportunity for parent involvement.
Parent #10
Strengths: their concern for the safety and education of the children. Weakness: Cost of education to maintain the diversity of the program.

It is amazing to see a class of 30 3 year-olds quietly eat lunch. I became an advocate of the Montessori teaching method; it is calming, and taught my children to read earlier than they would have learned.
Parent #2
This teacher is so talented that I am amazed daily by the information and ideas that my son comes home with from school. Always with a smile on his face and a calm, quiet voice he intrigues his students with his lessons. He will be a role model for my son for the rest of his life.
Parent #3
Our teacher is excellent as are her assistants. They provide a loving structure where my daughter feels supported. She can learn at her own pace and she loves the activities. In addition to the regular school day, BCMS also includes Yoga and dance classes as part of their after school activities.
Parent #4
Our child's teacher is gentle, but firm. Is respected and loved. She always has so many projects happening and the kids get really involved.
I could not be happier with a teacher and will be saddened when we leave Big City for kindergarten.
Parent #5
My child's teacher has only been the head teacher for a few months, but my child loves her.
Parent #6
I've put 100% of my trust in this school. They will come to you if any issues arise. They are very good about this. I just need to commnt that the techers Pearl, Evelyn, and Sanath are very professional and have tenure with the school. It's apparent that this team is happy and will be working at this school for long time.
Parent #7
My child's teacher is a very kind and caring teacher. She is the newest of the 3 main teachers but she is full of love and dedication.
Parent #8
Oddly, the teachers we have worked with seem to have a timid command of English. Teacher helpers -- while super nice! -- are not great at communicating in English, which is no biggie, just adds some Spanish (mostly) to the mix! But even our lead teachers seem to struggle, something that I find unacceptable for educating children in their most active language aquisition phase of their lives.

Savvy Source's Comments
"A Montessori education is one that involves cooperation and communication between school and home. Harmony between the two is very important. When your child enters Montessori class, your child becomes part of a Montessori family. Here are a few tips that may help your home be a Montessori home, which fosters independence and self confidence for your child: Read to your child: Ask simple questions about the story. Ask the child to retell, pantomime the act or repeat the sequence. Play games with your child: Talk about the rules that need to be followed and listen to directions. Build an understanding of number concepts: Practice counting objects Recognize symbols (1,2,3) Understanding time: Today, tomorrow, yesterday- this is very difficult for kindergarten children. Understanding words like more and less, bigger and smaller, before and after. Develop memory: Memorize nursery rhymes and short poems. Tell a simple story. Remember correct sequence of events. Help notice details: Play games that involve picking out differences between objects which are very much alike. Use objects like buttons, money, cards, etc. 'Find the ones that are similar and dissimilar.' Learn to sort objects by characteristics: Practice sorting objects by size, color, shape, function or material. Build vocabulary: Help your child learn the names of objects in your home, in specific rooms, in closets, in drawers. Talk about words and explain what they mean. Play games that describe characteristics to which the child must supply a name: I'm thinking of a long metal object, used in the kitchen, which we use to cut food. What is it? Learn the colors: Call attention to the colors of objects. Help your child point to colors when you name them and name them when you point to them. Increase his general store of information: Talk to your child about experiences he has had; an excursion to the park, a movie you watched together, a walk. All can be an opportunity to increase his knowledge about the world he lives in. Help you child use his imagination: Encourage inventive games that involve pretending: playing house, or store or school; being an imaginary hero-all of these games help in developing your child's critical thinking skills." Big City is very academic and taught my children to read phonically. It is a great education in a loving environment. I cannot say enough good about our experience in Big City.
Parent #2
Parents are encouraged to make special education presentations to classes. One parent taught about the Irish culture, one taught about jewish culture/traditions, etc.
Parent #3
BCMS is as much as a community as you want it to be. Other parents are friendly and are looking for play dates with their children. Teachers will meet with you as much or as little as you desire. A monthly newsletter is published, and a weekly e-mail is sent regarding what your class did that week. You can raise money for scholarships for children to attend BCMS if you choose to do so.
Parent #4
I can drop in anytime, but I have to respect the enviroment.
Parent #5
the director enocuranges visits months before child is to regularly attends the school
Parent #6
I think the school is flexible on this issue to the extent they make themselves available based on the needs of the child and/or parent. They don't force the structure when it is not needed.
Parent #7
The director is very easy to reach as she is at the school at all times. She absolutely has her finger on the pulse of the school, and her door is always open.
Parent #8
Close to no feedback on individual progress. Weekly overview select topics covered the previous week. Individual feedback provided upon request, during parent-teacher meetings, always in the presence of the director. Feedback given did not necessarily match parent observations outside school

Parent #1
If you are looking for a brand new building this is not it. If you want an established practice with no surprises and a great education with free time play, this is the school for you! I would not have taken this time to fill out the survey if it wasn't stellar.
Parent #2
There are not rooms allocated specifically for music, library and art but they are integrated into the classrooms and common areas.
Parent #3
The school provides a home-cooked lunch that is made fresh on the premises every day with a changing menu once a month that always thinks of the childrens palette as well as their health (Whole wheat bread, vegetables and a lot of protein). The snacks are often fresh fruit. Mealtimes are also a time for the children to practice their independence by clearing their own table and cleaning up after themselves.
Classroom equipment is kept in top shape - Montessori classrooms as a rule make sure that all games and activities have all the pieces to show the children that their time is respected and to teach them the value of respecting property.
One of the schools amazing properties is the afternoon enrichment activities - each afternoon children have dance, yoga, music, art or spanish and they LOVE IT! The school also houses a monthly "in house" field trip - with something exciting for the children to enjoy (reptile man, bubble lady, puppet show etc...).
Parent #4
It's an older building, but the floor coverings are all new and polished frequently, regularly paint the building inside and out, new light fixtures, refurbished the play area, replace bikes as needed, toys replaced as needed. The school budget's it money to upgrade different fixtures every year.
Parent #5
Discipline is handled with a zen-like focus. You never hear yelling from the teachers. They show their students respect, even when it is clear the child is trying to irk them. My daughter, 4 YO, threw a tantrum and I received a note. She and I discussed the incident and to my knowledge it hasn't happened again. The teachers are fair and trustworthy.
Parent #6
This school is extremely clean.
The meals are made on site and are healthy while still being attractive to the little eaters.
Discipline is handled fairly and immediately. Timeouts are given and this time is supervised. The issues are discussed with child and the child takes ownership. When the child is ready he is put back into the system. Rarely does the problem happen again. As a parent, I am always informed about an incident when I pickup my child.
There is excellent parent, teacher and director communication. I feel that we all work together as a team. The staff, knows my child well, and takes special effort to insure his success. We are all on the same page for discipline and the same methods that are used in school are used at home.
Parent #7
The school works with you in all areas. Discipline is handled by communication directly with the parents. The school will also make a plan for your child to support the child during the day. They also give you useful information to support you at home with dicipline. I have to admit, I used this service a few times.
Parent #8
Discipline was handled in a very professional maner. I feel very safe leaving my child here. The school is well kept and is in direct contact with the neighbors. For example, there was a new building being built close by. She made it clear that there are children and the area and they respected her. Now there is a new beautiful building and the inconvience is over.
Parent #9
BCMS is always striving to improve the conditions of the school. Although the location of the grounds may throw you off at first, it is actually very convienent especially if you work downtown. Space is not a problem like it is in other schools and you don't have to drive out of your way to get there.
Parent #10
When a child is involved in a conflict with another child, or gets a scrape on the playground, or whatever, this incident is communicated in a report to the caregiver/parent. In the report are details of the incident, what was done to correct it, the CHILD's response to the corrective action, and the resolution. Then the director seeks out the parent/caregiver at pickup time to alert them to the goings-on with their child.
Parent #11
Teachers are remarquable at keeping conflicts to a minimum. All assistant teachers are careful, engaged and know their roles well. Single point that keeps me from giving them full credit on conflict resolution is their policy of allowing children to engage in exclusionary play rather than engaging them in finding a solution together. I guess, this approach works well in the large setting, but kids never learn those crucial social skills. What's definitely missing is a reading / quiet area, where kids who really need a respite can grab a book from the shelf and give themselves a time out. Their "library" is a corridor...

Advice from Parents to Prospective Parents on Admissions
Parent #1
I begged!
Parent #2
Nope
Parent #3
No, it is first come - first served.
Parent #4
I enrolled when my child was turning one. Now parents are calling sooner. The school is full for the year 2008-2009. I think they are enrolling for 2009-2010.
Parent #5
When my first started here, it was 1st come 1st served. Now there is a long waiting list. Call 1 year in advance. Call at least when your child is 6 months old.
Parent #6
no, - the timing was right.
Parent #7
No, the school keeps a strictly first-come, first-served waiting list. She does not "hand pick" families to fill her classes. All children deserve an excellent start in school. That's what she believes and that's how she conducts her admissions process.
Parent #8
School seems in much more demand than when we applied. Don't lose hope if waitlisted, eventually there will be some room opening up as the year ends. But also hedge your bets with alternatives.
