Parents' Comments
Parent #1
Bright Horizons has wonderful teachers that provide children a structured environment with fun and educational activities at all ages. I have either had extremely good luck or there is a sound administration that encourages good communication with parents and a strong sense of community. I have been very pleased with the Center since enrolling my oldest daughter in 2005.

Parent #2
As with anything this size, there are great interactions and poor ones. I've seen one resource teacher who is always positive, imaginitive and I would love it if my child where in her care. I've seen a child hurt another on the playground and the teacher both didn't want to hear about it nor do anything about it. My infant seems to enjoy his class though I am concerned for the future.

Bright Horizons tries to offer lots of extra information for parents from CPR and positive dicipline classes to a place to drop off dry cleaning. They have regular calls and parent commities. The director is very nice.

Parent #3
Don't be fooled by this schools' appearant good facilities. The teachers are not taking good care of the kids and the management is a mess. My son got four bites and two deep scratches (with one bites and the scratches on the face) within a month. For the very first bites the teachers are not even showing any sorry for that. We changed schools and my son is much happier now. We strongly DON'T recommend this child care center.

Parent #4
It was a horrible experience.

Parent #5
As an infant, my son received attention and interaction all day. In the toddler program, language and social skills were taught in a playfilled environment. In the transition program, early learning skills (numbers, letters, colors, shapes) were explored through play. Transition to the PK program was a little slow and we saw some regression but it was quickly taken care of when brought to the centers attention. The PK program had highly trained, certified teachers who taught early academic skills, again in a fun environment. The kinder program, while not as rigerous as the public school kinder program, is a great academic program to prepare a student for success when ready for kinder. My son did this at the age of 4 and is now reading, writing journal entries, and doing basic math. We also saw growth in social skills and he plays well with others.

Parent #6
Both of my children have learned amazing self help skills. I see other Parents doing things (hand washing, dressing, feeding, etc.) that my children are very skilled at thanks to the curriculum at BH. The only weakness is one that is common in schools like ours, teacher turnover. The lead teachers and a good portion of the strongest teachers have been there for quite a long time, however the support teachers and resource teachers seem to turn over more than I would like.

Parent #7
Great curriculum for ALL ages.

Parent #8
Good overall school. Some turn-over like all schools at this level. Generally good parent communication and involvement.

Parent #9
Teachers are great! Teachers are Great! Teachers are great! Support Staff is Great too!

Parent #10
I appreciate what the schools has done to create a feeling of community. Where some schools avoid celebrating holidays BH looked for the commonalities in the cultural ways that the winter holidays are celebrated and hosts a 'Festival of Lights' that encourages everyone to come together and educates the children about different holidays and ways each culture religion celebrates.

Parent #11
I have learned so much from the teachers at this school in the context of conflict resolution and discipline. From a very young age, children are encouraged to work out their own disagreements with the teacher acting as mediator (e.g. Johnny, What do you say to Susie if you want to play with the dinosaur she is holding? And Susie, What are some things you can say to Johnny if he grabs your toy.) Teachers seem to have limitless patience as they help children negotiate with their friends. Behavioral reinforcement is always positive (e.g. 'Johnny, please keep your feet on the floor.' as opposed to 'No Johnny, no climbing on the bookshelf!')

The World at Their Fingertips Education for Bright Horizons, based on a rich tradition of early childhood education theory and practice empowers children to become confident, successful, lifelong learners and secure, caring people. We help children see the world as an invitation to learn, grow, and live fully by seeing possibilities within their reach. We help children approach school and academics with skills, confidence and a drive to succeed. Children are active learners who learn best from activities they plan and carry out themselves. However, teachers at Bright Horizons Family Solutions provide the environment and experiences from which children learn. Based on observed skills and emerging ideas of the group and individuals, they create experiences appropriate for each child, ask stimulating questions, provide challenges, and help children find new answers and new opportunities. Teaching also involves helping children achieve the confidence and self-discipline to increasingly develop more sophisticated social and intellectual skills and knowledge that will prepare them for success in school.

A variety of learning 'centers' are part of each classroom... dramatic play, blocks, math center, science center, reading, writing, etc. Children may choose the center in which they play and are encouraged to stay at that center for 10-15 minutes before moving on. This is to allow the child to truly engage in an activity and develop the ability to focus. Children must pick up the toys/tools/manipulatives with which they were working before moving on to another center. It was interesting to me that the children were required to ask their teacher before moving to a new center. At first, I regarded this as a bit too much structure, but I now realize that the teachers are trying to develop the child's ability to think ahead and plan their actions. Rather than simply running off to where their friend du jour is, they tend to scan the room and give it some thought before choosing a center and verbalizing it to the teacher. Both my son and daughter respond well to this structured approach to unstructured play, as they seem to be overwhelmed when there is a room full of toys with no 'centers' or such organization.

Parent #2
One of the BEST parts about Bright Horizons is that it has a very robust and well rounded curriculum that is customized by classroom. It covers all areas mentioned in this survey and more. The learning is approahed in hands-on application that allows the children have fun while still providing enriching learning experiences.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Teachers do individual child observations and plan curriculum based on child's needs in classroom. Vary activities to accomodate children.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The thing that seems to differentiate this school from others I looked at (and have heard about from friends) is it's strong committment to teacher quality and curriculum planning. Teachers submit lesson plans each week which build on skills the children are focusing on. Lessons are fine-tuned for smaller groups of children based on their individual needs and abilities. While I would not regard this school as having a rigid curriculum, I would say that their intent is to teach children to love to learn. I am constantly amazed by the creative ways they engage my children in subjects that I would have thought far too complex for their ages, which just goes to show me that I picked the right experts for a reason.

Parent #2
There has recently been a change in staff, so I am not as familiar with the second teacher.

Parent #3
Our child's teacher is OUTSTANDING. She is great with the children and parents, and serves as a role-model for other teachers.

Parent #4
I continue to be enormously impressed by the quality of the teachers at our Bright Horizon location. They are terrific about partnering with me to address learning goals or behavior issues with my child. Their suggestions are very insightful so I've learned a lot about how to address particular issues from them. More importantly I love to see how much they obviously care about my child - which is evidenced by how much my child loves them too!

Parent #5
The teachers in this school are fabulous! They are well trained, organized and really care for the children. They come up with very appropriate lesson plans for the kids and tailor them to what the kids seem interested in at the time or are asking alot of questions about.

Parent #7
The teachers were very nice girls, but did not have a handle on the children. Kids were getting hurt a lot and the teacher would never bother to call the parents. We had several talks with the teachers and the administration, but it was like we were speaking a different language. They just smiled and agreed, but never did anything to help.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Bright Horizons does not operate on a 'school year' basis. So the meetings I have had with the teachers and the developmental/progress information I have received was really when my child transitioned from one class to another (for example from a room of 2 - 3 year olds to a preschool room of 3 - 5 year olds) and then during parent teacher conferences. So it is year round and not necessarily at the beginning of any year.

Parent #2
Bright Horizons provides year-round education, and as such, there is not a 'school year,' hence there is not an open-house meeting or the need for any formal 'separation' program. Parents are neither encouraged or discouraged from staying as long as they like during drop-off and pick-up and are welcome to drop by for lunch or at any time of day.

Parent #3
Some questions were not applicable, because my child is under 1 year old.

Parent #4
Bright Horizons does not operate on a school year basis - it operates year round - so we don't have to worry about the start of preschool separation. PT conferences take place during the year and as children transition to the next room, which happens when the child is ready, not based on a school schedule. We have an active Parent Support committee which stays connected to the center leadership to understand what activities are coming up to lend support and to plan additional activities.

Parent #5
When our child went to preschool they transitioned from another class with-in the same school. We did not have or need any formal meetings to get to know the facility or Staff.

Parent #6
Because this is a daycare, they do not really operate on a school year basis. While the curriculum is not rigorous, they certainly have developmental goals for the children to strive for.

Parent #7
This is the weakness of the preschool program. The infant room is excellent in many of the above areas but the preschool seem a little more relaxed. I have not yet had a parent-teacher conference (probably due mainly to some turn-over recently).

Parent #8
none

Parent #9
School was very open and even provided a place for me to pump when nursing (or nurse).

Parent #10
All the children cry here at drop-off. That says something. The teachers say it is normal but not so at other locations. Our child was bitten over and over again. We talked to the teachers and the director, but it continued to happen. Not enough supervision.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
Bright Horizons has controlled access through the front door via a door code. The teachers would not release a child to a non-parent without first having been told that Grandma, Aunt, friend, etc. is picking up and would call up to the office to verify. Either before being allowed back to the classrooms or at the time of phone call, ID must be checked against the list of people approved to pick up the child. The playground facilities at Bright Horizons are not the over-the-top type that are visible from the street as you see in some centers. In fact, they are quite hidden from view behind the school, which is surrounded by greenspace. This gives me comfort that people are not lingering near the school and watching my children. This school places a higher priority on teacher quality and curriculum than on showy playground equipment. Having said that, the playground equipment (playscapes, shade structures, trikes, balls, water play area, etc.) are all is excellent condition and is more than sufficient to keep my children active and entertained during outside playtime (approx. 1.5-2 hours per day)

Parent #2
I like that the outside playground equipment is covered to limit exposure to our potent Texas sun. There are also covered patios so that kids can be outside even if it's raining. The teachers are very watchful of the health of students and if a child runs a fever the parent is called immediately to come pick up their child.

Parent #3
Due to usage by children I can not realistically rate all facilities and grounds as Excellent condition.

Parent #4
Teachers are very good about their communication with the children. Haven't really had a discipline issue involving my child in the 2 years that we've been at the school.

Parent #5
