School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

"The JCC Preschool and Kindergarten provides a comprehensive program
that allows children to flourish. Young children learn best when they are
involved in situations in which they interact with both the physical and social
environments. Our curriculum provides experiences that are rich and developmentally appropriate, responding to the interests and creativity of the
faculty and the children.
The classrooms are designed in well-planned learning centers that
permit the children to explore and make choices as they learn and play.
Language development, mathematical reasoning, and scientific reasoning
are all considerations in classroom design. Changes to the environment are
reflective of emerging interests. Faculty members create stations that allow
children to work independently and in small groups, fostering
success in both school and in life.
Throughout the day, children use self-directed and guided choices as they
utilize "choice systems," participating in small- and large-group
activities. Teachers strive to build upon the thoughts and actions of
children, rather than directly controlling the environment.
Typical learning centers include Language and Literacy, Blocks and
Construction, Dramatic Play, Art and Creative Expression, Sensory
Experiences, Outdoor Learning, Music and Movement, Scientific Discovery,
and Manipulatives. Activities enriching the classroom experiences include
instruction in swimming, computers, Hebrew, physical education, music, and
Jewish values and ethics.
In an effort to bridge the experiences between the children's home and
school life, we strive to nurture positive parent partnerships. We encourage
parental participation in our classroom activities. Formal conferences are
scheduled twice per year, in addition to more informal communication
throughout the year."
