Parents' Comments
Parent #1
There are two classes in the school and a wonderfully flexible schedule of days and hours. The children love to bake their own snack and seasonal dishes to bring home. The teacher of the younger class seems a bit distant to parents but the kids really love her and she send them postcards from her vacation!

Parent #2
This is a great, small neighborhood school. The teachers have connections to many families in the area, as they have been at the school for 25 years. They have a sense of play that the children love, and a nice, easy way of disciplining those who need it. Two things in particular appeal to me. First, Sue reads from the newspaper to the children, keeping them informed of appropriate current events. Second, they go on lots of field trips to intersting places like museums, shows, etc. In some years the families are more cohesive than in others.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

Founded more than 35 years ago, Church of the Redeemer Cooperative Nursery School offers a warm, nurturing, and happy learning environment for 3 and 4 year olds that prepares them for kindergarten. The school uses classrooms in the parish house of the historic Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill, but has no affiliation with the church.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

We have two classes, the Bumble Bee group for children 2.9 to 3.9 and the Explorers for children 3.9 to 5. Classes typically range from 7-14 children, with two teachers. In addition to the standard range of pre-school activities and art projects, we often have a weekly cooking project that the children participate in, and a visiting teacher for music and Spanish instruction. We frequently take advantage of the nearby MBTA Green line to make field trips to Brookline and Boston destinations. We are also a short walk from the trails and gardens of the 114-acre Hammond Pond Reservation, which we regularly visit for nature explorations.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
It's difficult to answer the questions about curriculum. It is a preschool, after all, and the teacher is far more hands on than the term 'teacher-led instruction' means. This schools is really a combination of teacher-led activities and some free play. The school also has a music teacher once a week and a Spanish teacher once a week.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
I love both my child's teachers at the Church of the Redeemer. My child is in the Explorer group, which is for the older children. They are terrific when I drop my daughter off, and always let me know how the day went. I look forward to seeing these teachers every day!

Parent #2
There is a wonderful music teacher who also teaches Spanish and has given my children a wonderful grounding in both. Every day the kids take a walk in the neighborhood exploring on their way. I love this level of freedom in the school.

Director's and Parents' Comments

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
My child is going to public school, so there was no need for guidance. I have no idea if they provide guidance for those who are interested in private school.

Parent #2
The teachers have over 20 years experience and can assess each child's individual separation issues. When a child is experiencing problems one teacher will take them into the playroom until they are ready to rejoin the group.

Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
There really isn't a place to screen visitors. The school is in the basement of a church, with the children in their rooms being supervised by the teachers.
