School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

The British School of Boston aims to offer the best elements of a UK Primary Education, embracing the most successful practices from the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum for England. We follow a broad and balanced curriculum that draws on a wide variety of teaching and learning styles.
Our aim is to provide a secure, happy, and stimulating learning environment where children are encouraged to develop to their full potential. We also endeavour to help children to become caring, independent, and self-motivated individuals, aware of themselves, others and the diverse world in which they live.
We provide an atmosphere where children learn how to work, play and co-operate with others and function as a group outside the family.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

One of the strengths of the Foundation Stage (and upwards) curriculum is the differentiation that is at the core. There is no glass ceiling placed on allowing a pupil to excel, and equally we support children requiring additional support with learning that meets the child by means of differentiated work in the classroom or small group support. Parents will of course be informed and involved at all stages if their child or children have additional learning needs and will be offered the opportunity to discuss their child's programme with the ALN coordinator.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

There is an Informational Evening for parents at the beginning of the school year. There are several opportuniites to enable parents to discuss their child's progress with the class teacher. In additional there are 'communication' books that travel between School and home each day for teachers and parents to comment. We believe that children feel most secure and learn best when all 'significant adults' are working together for their benefit. Partnership between School and home is of paramount importance and is a strong feature of our philosophy. This partnership grows if there is regular, two-way communication, contact and discussion between home and School.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
- Small group sessions

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

During the admissions stage, we offer class visits for prospective pupils to familarize themselves with the teacher, classroom and other pupils. If the child is anxious then we do not force the child to separate but instead encourage them to 'join in' on the fun and suggest a 2nd class visit, which typically enables the child to be more comfortable - by knowing what to expect during their next visit. This approach is less stressful for a child who is hesitant to separate. Equally, our teachers are well trained in encouraging children to come in to the classroom and reassure the child that their parent will rejoin them soon.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Our teachers follow a standard of describing to a child what is expected. If a child is disruptive or hurtful to a classmate, it is explained to the child 'how their behaviour' made the other person feel. If the behaviour would continue to be disruptive, the teacher would contact the parents to have further discussions towards resolution.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

Our teachers would encourage the child who is being excluded to broaden their 'friendship circle' by joining in with others that they may not typically play with. Whilst also explaining that they have not done anything wrong, it is just that sometimes our friends like to see/join in with what others are doing or playing with.

Food Allergies

- We do not allow certain foods in the classroom

Medications

- We keep their medication on hand at all times
