School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

At Chandler Academy we believe students should be drawn to knowlege. We provide a flexible and challenging curriculum that is custom designed for each child's strengths and needs. Our reading program and instruction starts at the three year old level and goes thru the eighth grade. We believe students should learn at thier own pace not according to thier age or grade level. We nurture and foster strengths without ignoring the needs of the gifted student.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

The day begins with circle time, to share stories that students write or for the younger student the picture they drew. After that we learn Spanish days of the week, months of the year, colors and counting, by singing songs. We complete circle time with parachute and brainbased excersizes. Older students work independantly in text books, younger students go to centers or work in small groups with the teacher on phonics, math, or art skills. There are two recess/outside periods a day, art, music, and p.e. classes every week.

Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

We have certified teachers with years of experience that love to learn and teach. They understand every child is an individual and that every child learns in different ways. They strive to enable every student to learn and grow to thier potential.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

We greet each parent and student in the morning and at pick up in the evening. For the younger students the parents get a daily written report of activities. For the elementary students, a weekly newsletter and bi-anual confrences are given.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
- Small group sessions
- Parents in classroom early on

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

We engage the children in activities they find interesting. We also assign a peer to buddy up with a new child.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled well in a way that gives me confidence in the safety of my child

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

We make the rules very clear and use the treat others the way you want to be treated philosophy. We keep the students very engaged in age appropriate activities that prevents alot of discipline issues. If there is an issue we follow the one minute for each year old rule.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We would try to get chikd b to play with some one else or come up with a game that all three children could play. I would discuss with the whole class the issue of treating others the way you want to be treated and talk about feelings.
