Parents' Comments

The preschool is good but the elementary school is going downhill.

Centennial Academy is fairly new, now in its 4th year. I was worried about that, since new places sometimes have "kinks" to work out, but my daughter is really doing well there. They have a good mix of structure and play. She's ahead of some kids, academically, but what I really want from a Pre-K is learning to be with kids her own age, sharing, making friends, resolving conflicts, etc., and learning to be away from mommy, so that Kindergarten isn't a trauma! The hours are SO flexible (campus opens at 7 and closes at 5:30, with no extra charge) with actual classes running 8:30-3:30. She loves her teacher (a 12-year veteran) and her assistant teacher. I looked at many schools and programs, and I feel like we did the right thing.

I have a wonderful relationship with my daughter's teacher. There are formal "meetings," but she's very easy to talk to informally whenever she or I have a concern. I get great feedback on what Jen's doing in the classroom, and it's therefore easy for me to tie in home activities/discussions.
Parent #2
Communications depend on the teacher- some do and some dont. School does not communicate often with parents.

are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

The main rule is "be kind," which translates to being kind to other kids, the teachers, the classroom, the animals, the environment, etc. My daughter responds very well to this. Now, if she's acting out at home (much less since school started) I ask her, "are you being kind?" and she can usually snap out of it quickly. She has learned that there are consequences for her behavior, and that she can't always be first. I really feel the discipline is just right at the school, neither too lax or too heavy-handed.
