Parents' Comments
Parent #1
The director and teachers are fantastic about communicating what is happening with my child on a daily basis, even if it's just to tell me a funny thing he said. They truly care about every child and treat each one as an individual.

Parent #2
There is a male teacher with a Montessori background who is a tremendous mentor and positive figure for the boys.

School Philosophy & Day in the Life

School Philosophy and Mission

The Infant Development Center of San Francisco (IDC) was established in 1978 to provide quality child care to working families. Originally supervised by Lone Mountain College (now part of USF's Campus), IDC relocated into the Inner Sunset district when the college closed. Through collaboraitve efforts of staff and parents, the IDC incorporated as an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality childcare in San Francisco. In 1983 parents and alumni families made it possible for the organization to purchase our present building at 10th and Lawton where we operate Gates & Bridges Preschool. We believe that children who spend the day apart from their parents benefit from an intimate, involved setting. The philoshopy of our early childhood program rests on the importance of:
* primary attachments and the relationship between children, parents, and teachers;
* respect of all children as competent and capable people;
* provision of a safe, predicatable, interesting and aesthetic environment;
* respect and response to the uniqueness of each child;
* excellent early childhood professionals.

Typical Day-In-The-Life At This School

We care for only 16 children with a ratio of one teacher to eight, allowing opportunities for small groupings and individual attention. Our daily program includes language arts, dramatic play, art, music, tactile and sensory exploration, science/math, cooperative games, outdoor play, organized group times, meals together, and rest/nap period. There are opportunities for both structured and spontaneous activities inside and outside. We offer a planned, yet flexible curriculum geared to the children's common interests and growing competencies. Morning and afternoon programs are often centered around themes and interest topics. Much of the curriculum emerges out of play episodes, books, experiences and conversations that children share with their teachers and each other. Teachers encourage each child to pursue spontaneous and individual interests.

Director's Comments

We seek to balance various ingredients of a variety of early childhood philosophies into an exemplary program. We believe that children need many opportunities to play, experience, explore, discover, and practice in a safe, child centered environment. We respect the child's need for both nurturing and independence, quiet and active play, time alone and time in group endeavors. We have a planned curriculum geared to the common interests and growing competencies of preschoolers, while our teachers also encourage each child to pursue spontaneous and individual interests.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
I feel like activities are teacher led but also incorporated into free play so I was not sure how to answer some of these. The children have a choice in activities but the children learn about history and arts. The curriculum is theme based so they will often learn history, art, math and reading all around the same theme.

Parent #2
Strong balance between play-based and instructor-led learning activities.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
The mix of teachers at Gates and Bridges is well-balanced and each brings their own strengths. They take pride (and it is reassuring as a parent) that they have a great retention rate with all having been there between 5 and 25+ years. Can't say enough about this small, but dedicated staff and volunteers.

Parent #2
The teachers provide a great balance, the musician, the arts & crafts guru, the nurturer, and the relationship builder. They each have an area of expertise that results in a well-rounded experience for the kids.

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
An excellent preschool with teachers who have been around for 10-20 years. They are invested and dedicated.

Parent #2
The school is very flexible in handling the separation process. They assist in identifying what makes the separation process easier. It is a year round school so the process only has to be undertaken when the child first starts school.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Discipline

OVERALL RATING (5.0) Five Stars
Parents' Opinions
Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children: are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

There are too many unknown factors, for example previous behavior/actions, by the children to answer this question. However, I will state that we believe that through their interactions with each other, children develop the social skills that enable them to function well in a group setting. The children develop listening and sharing skills, respect for each other and learn to solve problems and conflicts, with teacher guidance. The small group size maintenance of peer groups through the year provide the ideal environment for continued development of these skills. We encourage children to 'use their words' and assist them in acknowledging feelings and creating solutions to interpersonal interactions, as developmentally appropriate for each child involved in any given situation.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parents' Comments

Parent #1
This is a small school with a new play structure outside. I initially thought it was too small inside but then I realized (after putting her in another larger school) that many children this age feel better in smaller spaces. She loves it.

Parent #2
Facilities improvements have been made throughout our time at the school including new refrigerator and furnace, playground improvement, re-do kids bathroom, new windows and shades, and other upgrades that show thought and care.

Parent #3
Major cleaning and building upkeep are undertaken by the parents at least 2X a year. Recently installed new outdoor play area including water play and hanging bars.

Parent #4
Some of the toys and equipment are a little worn in but I think this is good for the kids. It feels very real and homey.

Advice from Parents to Prospective Parents on Admissions

Parent #1
I would encourage persistence and letting directors know you are interested even if you first receive a 'rejection notice'. That's what worked for us.

Parent #2
Frequent calls to check on openings and attendance at pre-admission open house.

Parent #3
Frequent visits to all open houses.
