Although the school DOES provide a superior education, it uses a model of discipline and motivation that is reminiscent of Catholic schools from 30 years ago including shame, humiliation, intimidation, fear, and belittling. It is not a true Montessori environment although the teachers are certified and the materials are true AMI materials.

The school has no board of directors. Several of the teachers are on temporary work visas. In a building owned by the school, there is a fantastic ballet studio for the children.

Many parents continue to send their children here because of the superior education, and because their children have not witnessed or experienced any maltreatment.

I found the management to be wholly inadequate. There is no board. There is no robust, active or powerful parent association.

Still -- they have been around for 25 years and have testimonials up the wazoo.

So... do your own research, look for the wordpress blog on ABC Montessori, and make up your own mind. But you should KNOW what you are walking into.

A Human Services Report has been issued after an investigation that dated back to November 2007.The report has determined that a staff person was found guilty of maltreatment of children. This means that the staff person was verbally abusive toward the children and handled the children in a rough manner which included grabbing the children by the arms.

The second allegation was not determined. This included inappropriately touching a child on the upper thigh and having an inappropriate relationship with them.

The result of this means that the ABC International Montessori School has lost their child care license and the staff person involved in this report is no longer allowed to have interaction with children. You can download a copy here. abcmontessori.wordpress.com

The Bloomington Police Department has 4 separate police reports on file siting inappropriate behavior with children by a staff member. The city of Bloomington has removed the names of the alleged victims and the school employees involved in the past investigations.

While no one has been charged and the cases are not currently open or under investigation, the number of reports and incidents that site “inappropriate behavior” is cause for concern. Contact the Bloomington Police Department to obtain a copy for yourself.

the school uses typical Montessori activities

This is a Montessori school which follows the AMI Montessori model for work. Curriculum is individualized to each child after one month's evaluation and a learning plan is developed. Children are free to choose from a variety of works once the work has been presented to the child. Teachers usually present the works one-on-one with the children, sometimes two-on-one.

The facility is too small for the children it serves. There is one multipurpose room which is used for naps, piano lessons, violin lessons, a quiet room, and a library. The physical ed facility, while fantastic at 20 x 40 with 12-15' ceilings, and a wall full of mirrors with a ballet barre, and beautiful hard wood floors, is in the basement of the house of the administators 2 doors away from the school. They use a public park 10 minutes walk from the school as an extension of the school.
