Parents' Comments
Parent #1
I love Copper Beech. The staff is great with the exception of the transition lead teacher, but fortunately for the school and the children attending next year she will no longer be there. Although she is opening her own school in Hyde Park and I feel bad for the children and parents who that plan on going there.
Parent #2
Although, in principle, Montessori's method is very good, this particular institution, in the transition room at least, is run by incompetent, disinterested and "bored" instructors. Not only our son, but other children were received with lukewarm if no excitement. The main teacher showed NO enthusiasm for ANY activities and couldn't wait to get out at 3:30pm. A huge disappointment for all of us.
Parent #3
The Montessori education philosophy focuses on independent learning taking into account the individual pace and abilities and interests of each child. The kids have a structured day and follow certain rules which I think is different from other schools. The school emphasizes respect for each other and for each other's space. The kids are always encouraged to do things themselves and are not corrected if e.g. they put their shoes on the wrong feet because the belief is that they need to recognise the mistake on their own in order to learn from it. There are not toys other than educational toys (blocks, beads, puzzles, books) so a Montessori school is not for your child if you are looking for a more play-oriented school.

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
The art teachers are fantastic and very engaged with students. They also provide excellent feedback. The lead teachers are not present at pick-up, so there is little time to talk about how the bulk of the day went. My children love their weekly time with the 'specialists' - art, music, creative movement. From the main teachers there is no format for sharing insights on the children's strengths, difficulties etc, except at the two parent-teacher conferences annually. Any details about the day must come from your own child.
Parent #2
The school has a very enthusiastic art teacher (preschoolers have art class one morning a week) and a wonderful music program run by a teacher from the 'toddler room' who has a background in music and music education.
Parent #3
I answered always to every question, but I wouldn't say that I received feedback each day in each area or observed enough in the classroom each day to really say 'always', but my interactions with both the lead teacher and the supporting teacher were always very helpful and very positive. I never observed them interacting with the children in a way that made me unhappy. I picked my daughter up mid-day, so I did get to see some classroom dynamics. They were always very helpful with pick up and drop off and my daughter could be very 'high-maintenance' at these times. I never really got to observe the art and the music teacher in their classrooms, but their curriculums (curricula?)were excellent and their personalities while different from each other were both very patient and seemingly inspired.
Parent #4
Our son spent a difficult 3 weeks at this school. Both of us believe that the 2 of the 3 teachers assigned to run the transition room are uninvolved and on the clock. After hours of observation, there was NO enthusiasm from the teachers, no support system in place for transitioning children, and my child was left alone with a full diaper, without lunch and to lie on a dirty mat covered with wet areas from crying. Only one teacher seemed to have any caring for our child. The others just observed and gave our son no encouragement and support. Simply put, this school was a terrible experience for our son and us as parents.
Parent #5
The transition lead teacher is not good and very rude. She is leaving next school year, but unfortunately she is opening her own school in Hyde Park.

The teacher parent meeting happend BEFORE my child enrolled when I was invited to observe the classroom and spent time with the director and teacher. No parent education classes, but there is a Montessori Parent Education Newsletter published online every month. A written summary of my child's learning is given to us at the two parent teacher conferences in the middle and the end of the school year.

Learning goals: Copper Beech is a Montessori school, so while there is exposure to specific concepts and practice of specific skills, they do not set out a specific list of goals for each child at the beginning of the year.
On parent education classes: I don't recall that Copper Beech has held any 'Parent Education Classes' I could be wrong about this. However, they provide in the beginning of the year an written overview of the Montessori approach, as well as provide a reading list for further study. During the year they provide a news letter which discusses the Montessori approach as specifically practiced in your child's classroom. They also provide the 'PEN' - Parent Education Newsletter for Montessori families on their website.
Developing better at home: I'm also not sure that I understand specifically what this question is getting at, but we frequently receive info in our mailboxes and in newsletters about different Montessori related classes and materials that we may want for our children.
Separation: My eldest daughter had a great deal of trouble with the transition to school (and does with transitions in general). They were extremely kind and supportive for her. She needed quite a lot of encouragement and care and she definitely received it. Her teachers were also very helpful in helping me out in drop off.
School refefrals: I do not recall that Copper Beech had any formal recommendations for next steps in schooling. They did host several 'West Zone' Parents meetings to introduce parents to the Boston Public School System which were very helpful.

A beautiful classrom environment, particularly for the pre-schoolers. Wonderful, state-of-the-art equipment for learning activities.
