Quality of Teaching

Director's Comments on Individualized Teaching

Individualized Teaching

Description of how teachers work with children who are
"behind," "excelling" or "different" from the majority of students

Our low ratios (1:4 in our jr preschool, 1:7 in preschool, and 1:10 in pre-k) allow teachers the time and space to see each child as an individual. Children with demonstrated strengths are encouraged to model and develop their skills, and children who need more suppport or direction are provided with those as necessary.

Home School Connection

Director's Comments

We believe in school-family partnerships and cultivate those relationships in a number of ways: daily notes; monthly newsletters; weekly emails from director; student assessments and parent conferences scheduled twice yearly; such family events as "Pizza and Pumpkins", all-school Birthday Bash, Cocoa and Carols, and National Night Out. We have an open-door policy for parents, who are invited to observe and participate at any time. Parents have access to the program through our "parent cams" which allow you to observe your child through a secure link on your computer. This access gives parents an unprecedented look into their child's day at school.

Separation

Beginning of the year separation is handled through:
- Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
- Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Director's and Parents' Comments

Director's Comments

We support both children and parents who have separation anxiety! Each child's separation routine is determined by the parents' needs and the child's temperament. Some children are successful when their parents drop and go, others require parents to stay for brief periods or to attend on an abbreviated schedule for the first days. We work with you and your child to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Discipline, Health and Safety

Overview

Director's Description of Approach Toward Discipline

Dicipline = teaching.
Our responsibility is to teach children to cooperate and work with their teachers and other children. We re-direct inappropriate behavior, set appropriate limits and clear expectations. We cultivate children's awareness of self and others by helping them identify and give language to their feels. We also teach children to negotiate with each other and solve problems with growning independence.

When behavior is a-typical for a child's stage of development, the teacher, parents and director work together to consider solutions and engage outside experts when necessary.

Food Allergies

- We do not allow certain foods in the classroom

- We keep special snacks for allergic children

- We ask parents to provide child-safe snacks for their allergic child

Medications

- if a child is required to have medication during the day, the parent completes a permission form that includes Dr's instructions regarding dosage and timing. We never give medication on an "as-needed" basis

Director's Comments

Comments

We know that children learn to use the toilet at their own pace, and because of that, will allow children into any room even if they are not yet toilet learned. We place children into classrooms according to the cut-off for kindergarten: children who will be two by Dec 2 of the year they join us are in the Jr room, 3 by Dec 2 is preschool, 4 by Dec 2 is pre-k.

Age/Child Requirements

Child does not need to be potty trained to enroll.

Director's views on diversity:
We celebrate the diverse community at CCF. We draw families from all walks of life and are proud of the cultural mix present in our program.
