General Approach to Learning: Montessori

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The basics of the Montessori philosophy are the same for Pre-school and Kindergarten. We have a mixed age group so the children learn from each other as well as the environment, and are allowed to each learn at their own rate and develop into their own peer groups. There are five main areas of the Montessori classroom, “The Prepared Environment”, Reading and writing, Mathematics, Cultural Subjects, Sensorial and Practical Living Skills. The Montessori philosophy of education is a method of delivery of education by using the prepared environment and method of delivery while displaying and teaching these 10 Montessori givens:
1. Joy of Learning
2. Learning through Discovery
3. Ability to Choose
4. Attachment to Reality
5. Enjoyment of Quiet
6. Love of Order
7. Self-discipline
8. Independence
9. Concentration
10. Self-confidence
In keeping with these goals, Cornerstone Montessori adheres to a deep respect for the child and his/her individuality, as well as a respect for each family member. No learning materials or method will be placed above the good of the child.
Our personal goals are to have a shared vision, to become an extended family, to provide a theme centered curriculum of interest, to enhance development of creative abilities, to provide individual instruction in the Montessori environment, small class sizes with low student/teacher ratios, to provide experiences for leadership, enable the development of problem solving skills and higher level critical thinking, to nurture each child’s social/emotional growth and to develop a life long love of learning, all in a supportive environment with the assistance of parents and a link with the community."
