"As we join the heads, hearts and hands of our parents, teachers and students, we will graduate emotionally mature, intellectually capable, inquisitive, socially aware and self-motivated students who are fulfilling their potential.
At Discovery School we believe . . .
Each person is responsible for his or her own behavior
Each child is a unique and distinct individual to be celebrated
Education is a life long experience
School should be about learning
Learning is natural
Children learn at their own pace
Learning takes place most effectively when one is accepted and valued
Learning is process oriented rather than product oriented
Learning is a choice
Learning is enhanced by ownership in the education process
All intelligences should be honored and taught to
The arts are an essential part of learning
Creativity can be taught
Daydreaming is a worthwhile activity
The community is a valuable resource for learning
Contributing to the community is a personal obligation
Discovery School's educational approach is comprised of four distinct components:
The curriculum is process-oriented. Discovery School's philosophy is that process skills allow children to learn at their own rate as they transfer skills from subject to subject.
Problem solving is used to develop sharp minds. As students become flexible and fluent in their thinking patterns, they learn that learning is fun and rewarding.
Learning success enhances a positive self-concept and leads to an inquisitive, probing mind. Discovery School's goal is to allow each student to find his or her learning strengths so that successes can be maximized.
Students learn the importance of taking responsibility for their own actions in the same manner with which they learn to read and write. Clear academic and behavioral expectations are communicated to each student.
