General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

Curriculum & Teaching Approach

From the Director:

In most early learning programs, children move from classroom to classroom as their skills develop. Usually, teachers teach a certain age and stay in one room. Research shows that for young children, changing teachers can be detrimental to development. With this in mind, we implemented a ‘looping’ system in September 2002. Looping means that teachers move through the program with their children. The children are cared for in age groups based on when they go to kindergarten. This way, children and teachers move through the program in groups, enabling more significant relationships. Theoretically in this system, a child and family could have the same caregiver for four years. Research validates this change based on the following assumptions: • Learning is best fostered in the context of trusting and nurturing relationships. • Staff turnover negatively impacts children’s development. • In order to provide a culturally sensitive program, caregivers must have strong, trusting relationships with families. We believe this system gives teachers, children and families a much greater opportunity to form the kind of bonds that best nurture children and builds a relationship of openness and trust. Pike Market Child Care and Preschool supports each child’s individual development while offering families information, encouragement and support. The program focuses on building and maintaining high self-esteem, the development of proactive, non-violent social skills and an appreciation for diversity.

Pike Market Child Care and Preschool (PMCCP) is a community that works to meet the individual needs of all participants—children, families, volunteers and staff. Children learn by playing. During play, children interact with their friends and the environment. While playing they are learning about the world, other people and themselves. Play leads to knowledge through first hand action and the recreation of experiences. ‘Knowing’ is embedded in ‘doing'.

PMCCP provides a fun, stimulating community where children can explore, learn and grow at their own pace. Our program focuses on the development of healthy, high self-esteem, pro-active social skills and the empowerment of children and families. PMCCP is committed to providing children with the skills necessary to thrive in a diverse society. We value what each child brings to our program and work to reflect each family in our environment and day-to-day activities. We believe that the achievement of these goals will provide children with the attitudes, knowledge and skills necessary for effective living in an increasingly complex and diverse society. Anti-bias work is challenging and requires a commitment from staff and parents to examine and confront the biases in ourselves, as well as in our work with children. PMCCP recognizes the family as the primary educator in the growth and development of children. Research shows that children thrive in atmospheres that celebrate and validate their home culture and experience. Therefore, building positive and productive relationships with each family is critical to children’s development. We invite families to participate in all aspects of the program—from curriculum and classroom assistance to membership on the Board of Directors and/or committees.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Research shows that children thrive in atmospheres that celebrate and validate their home culture and experience. Therefore, building positive and productive relationships with each family is critical to children’s development. We invite families to participate in all aspects of the program—from curriculum and classroom assistance to membership on the Board of Directors and/or committees. We also encourage families to share their ideas, talents, stories and cultures. Communication and mutual respect between families and staff form the basis of healthy, strong relationships that best support the children and our entire community.

Pike Market Child Care and Preschool also supports the family—93% or families report that being enrolled at PMCCP has positively impacted their family’s ability to achieve their goals. We provide information and emotional support, as well as contact with other agencies to help families meet their immediate and on-going needs.

PMCCP assists families in meeting their emergent needs. We are able to provide parents with emergency assistance in times of unexpected need. Some past examples of this are funds for parenting classes, financial assistance that prevented eviction when there was a family crisis and tuition deferment plans.
