General Approach to Learning: Montessori

From the Director:

As a child passes from one stage of development to the next, his/her interactions within the orderly and beautiful environment assist him/her in acquiring higher levels of independence, self-discipline and joy. Carefully prepared didactic materials, along with the well-trained adult who serves as a link between the child and the materials, together comprise the Montessori method of education. The essential ingredients for this development of independence and joy are concentration and meaningful activities. The Montessori classrooms provide uninterrupted periods of work during which each child finds the activity which draws his/her full attention and which calls to his/her particular developmental needs. Children at all levels are encouraged to progress at their own rate. Because of the mix of ages in each classroom, a strong community is established in which the older children help the younger children in their learning process, developing a sense of self-discipline and respect for themselves and their community that they will carry with them throughout their lives. Day in the Life

General School Mission

The principles of education, i.e., student-centered learning with mixed ages of children working together in an environment based on respect for the child, are the principles upon which Pacific Crest was founded. It is our purpose to develop a community of children, parents and staff that together assist each child in his/her development such that every child is given the opportunity to reach his/her fullest human potential.
