Handling Separation: From the Director

We encourage parents to establish a drop-off routine with their child and to keep it consistent. Parents are welcome to spend a few minutes enjoying the classroom and talking with their child about what they do at school. Kids love to show their parents around and it helps to put the child at ease. When it is time for the parent to leave, we suggest a hug and kiss, or a special handshake, and then let the child know that you will be back to pick them up after lunch. We have a great window near the exit door so children can watch you go and wave goodbye. It is our job to let the child know that they are safe with us and that we will help them throughout the day, and that it is okay to feel sad when parents have to leave. It is also our job to redirect them and help them engage in an activity or with friends. Parents are always welcome to call after a bit to make sure their child has transitioned and is comfortable.
