General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Reggio-Emilia

From the Director:

Hailed as an exemplary model of early childhood education (Newsweek, 1991), the Reggio Emilia approach to education is committed to the creation of conditions for learning that will enhance and facilitate children's construction of "his or her own powers of thinking through the synthesis of all the expressive, communicative and cognitive languages" (Edwards and Forman, 1993).

Day in the Life

General School Mission

At Bon Air Presbyterian Preschool we encourage children to express themselves. We nurture a child’s creative and emerging skills in a warm and loving environment.

Based on the Italian, Reggio Emilia sound principles of child development, our preschool combines well-educated and inspiring teachers with a bright and sunny environment where children are free to explore.

Free to paint and create in a room devoted to art, to dress up and put on a play, to build a castle, to spend quiet time with books, to listen to music, to cook soup, to write a story, to climb & run on the playground, to take those first big steps towards independence, to learn and play with be a child.

A Typical Day

'Anne brought in caterpillars and we spent several weeks studying metamorphosis. The round yellow fruit of the Hardy Orange tree on the playground became the focus of an investigation. A magnolia cone sparked a hunt for the origins of the cone, found in the memorial gardens. Interest in Star Ways runs high among the five year old class, so watch for emerging Star Wars work.'
