General Approach to Learning: Montessori

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Dr. Maria Montessori, an early 20th Century Italian physician and pioneer of child development, believed that no human being is educated by another. He must do it for himself. A truly educated individual continues learning long after the hours and years he spends in the classroom because he is motivated from within by a natural curiosity and love for knowledge. Dr. Montessori believed, therefore, that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill a child with facts from a preselected course of studies, but rather to cultivate his own natural desire to learn.

The aim of the Montessori Program is to aid in the natural development of children at all stages of their lives. The Montessori prepared environment supports the social, physical, emotional, and intellectual development of each child.

Children under the age of six have an innate need to explore. The Montessori classroom allows the child to explore and discover with the minimum of interference or unnecessary assistance from the adult. In this manner, the young child gains confidence and moves towards greater levels of independence. Our classroom communities offer a warm, loving and supportive environment where children can progress at their own individual rate through a multitude of unique experiences.

The Montessori prepared environment is socially dynamic. Interaction with other children ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 6 years is part of the development plan. The younger children are stumulated by and learn from the older children. Older children in turn benefit from serving as role models and have the opportunity to reinforce their own knowledge by sharing it with younger students. "
