General Approach to Learning: Montessori

From the Director:

More of What Parents Say... "There's a warm, nurturing environment in which each child can develop intellectually, socially and emotionally, at their own pace. My son immediately felt comfortable and engaged in all the stimulating activities. He excelled in public school given the strong foundation he received." -Sue H.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Our warm, nurturing environment allows each child to develop intellectually,
socially and emotionally, at their own pace. Since we offer a small intimate program, we have a keen sense of each child's progress and work closely with families to help promote a love of learning. Encouragement/direction is offered both in small groups and individually, as needed. Occasionally we will bring in outside experts if needed.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our aim is not merely to make the child understand, and less still to force him to memorize, but to touch his imagination so as to enthuse him to his inmost core."
- Maria Montessori

At Somerset our primary goal is to help your child develop a love of learning. Our warm, caring environment nurtures children/families and a sense of community is encouraged/formed. The Montessori environment is scientifically prepared so as to help your child develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration and independence

A Typical Day

Imagine a classroom of 3-6 year olds, where younger children admire and model the older ones. Observe the older children as they help others, thereby re-enforcing their own skills and discovering their leadership abilities.
Watch the six year old as he/she invites younger children to listen to a story. Be awe struck as they adeptly change the characters' names and insert the names of their peers, thus, totally engrossing the younger children in the tale. Such experiences are just a few of the delightful moments we share at Somerset Montessori.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We are available to talk with parents on a daily basis. Notes, paintings and paperwork, if applicable are sent home on an as needed/completed basis. Parent breakfasts are scheduled every other month so as to give parents an opportunity to develop a bond with other families and to observe their children at work. Parent conferences are offered quarterly.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

Handling Separation: From the Director

Most children are fine if the parent gives the child a loving goodbye hug/kiss and tells them that they will see them later. Arriving on time and paying attention to your child instead of lingering for long periods allows for continuity and trust building with your child. Reassuring and distracting the child with all of the fun materials/activities we have available normally does the trick within a matter of minutes after the parent's departure.
