Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Teacher-Led

From the Director:

We develop the whole child, and engage in what we call the Family - School Partnership to raise healthy and intellectually curious young people. Together, parents and teachers find extraordinary ways to support learning and social development.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

We adapt instruction to meet the needs ofeach individual child as there is one-on-one instruction for part of lessons. Developing the trajectory for each based on individual and group readiness is an important part of our work with parents.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The mission of the Congressional Schools of Virginia is to prepare children, through an innovative and accelerated curriculum, to embrace the opportunities and responsibilities they will face as global citizens."

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Teacher conferences during formal and informal times. Parents interact with children on a daily basis at drop off and at pick up, so there is plenty of ongoing dialog. At formal conferences the portfolio and "report card" are shared to help suggest areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Small group sessions
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Parents in classroom early on

Handling Separation: From the Director

Generally, the visit to school helps each child to move fairly quickly from the parent to engage in the activities in the classroom with "friends". Should there be an issue, we separate and ask parents to move along, and over time with good collaboration we get to that place where students don't recognize that the parent has departed. Helping the parent to be comfortable with separation is also part of our work in the Family - School Partnership!
