General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

Elizabeth River Baptist Daycare's vision is to enrich family and community through early education. At ERBDC our mission is to provide quality child care and early education in a safe and supportive Christian environment where young children are able to grow in body, mind, and spirit. As a Christian child care center, we wish to exemplify our love for Christ in our daily lives by: (1) showing love and understanding for those with whom we come in contact; (2) supporting the work of the church, the child care, and the staff; and (3) supporting the goals, principles, and philosophy of education of ERBDC as well as its programs and administration. As a Center committed to providing quality early childhood care and education, we do not discriminate upon the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, economic status, or cultural background. Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

The usual lesson plan can still be utilized when beginning a preschool individualized learning curriculum. Instead, what will change will be the specific, child-centered goals for the lesson. While a class-wide lesson plan is always posted for parents to look at, the individualized learning goals are something that teachers will differentiate for a child.

Th plan can take on the form of a class list, with space for comments. For example, if the lesson plan includes an easel painting activity, the child's individualized plan may look like this:

Ryan: encourage Ryan to explore color mixing with primary colors; discuss secondary colors; mention tertiary colors if interest continues.
Nick: show Nick a mature grasp with the paintbrush; encourage Nick to use the mature grasp; show him how to make long brush strokes
Hannah: encourage Hannah to finger-paint; allow her to use plastic gloves if necessary

Handling Separation: From the Director

At ERBDC we recognize that placing your very young child to school age child in the care of someone else is a difficult and emotional decision.

Our teachers spend each day opening new worlds of discovery for your child in a safe, nurturing and creative environment. We offer developmentally appropriate programs designed for children from birth to age 12.
