The purpose of the Practical Life exercises is to help the child develop a sense of order, concentration, coordination, attention to details, and good working habits. The child's need for meaningful activity is satisfied through the guided use of ordinary objects such as dishes, buttons, water, silver for polishing, and many other materials.
The child encounters his or her world through his/her sensory impressions. Through the education of the senses the child learns to discriminate among the perceptions he/she receives. Each exercise isolates one defining quality such as length, color, or shape through comparisons, contrasts, and gradations.
Activities explore topics including history and appreciation of art, nomenclature and classification of zoology, science experiments, history and appreciation of music, and the study of historical figures. Reading and writing skills are used extensively in theses activities.
